Hanamura, Mieko and Jae-un, escorted by Struikas, Kobayashi, Alexei and Kensington to their flanks in a loose echelon formation, walk up to a nearby hill. The very same where the memorial to the Abdicant Seraphine laid. Since having been modified to pay tribute to those lost in defense of FOB Maehara, and those lost during the near-decade trip back to Sirius following the return of the Ouroboros.

Struikas, being the odd one out, had joined at the request of Mieko, who wished him to be with her to help in the mourning process.

A smaller plot lays unused nearby, at the very edge. Hanamura, at the fore, steps forth, in her bodysuit, the black material shimmering feintly in the sun of Omega-48. A picture, of a young, buxom teal-haired Zoner woman, rests upon a stone burial obelisk. As with traditional Japanese and thereby, Kusari heritage, a name lays engraved upon the stone.

Whilst there is no date of birth or death demarcated, beneath in english, reads a more common epitaph.

IN MEMORY OF MARISA KITA
CAPTAIN, ZS SIDON

THUS, SHE HATH NOT PERISHED FROM THIS REALM
FOR THE CALL OF THE FRONTIER BECKONED HER FORTH
AS ALL ZONERS ARE TO DO, SHE UNDERTOOK THE HELM
IN OUR HEARTS, AND IN THE STARS, IS HER HEARTH
WEEP NO MORE TEARS, NOT ONE MORE CRY TODAY
FOREVER MORE WILL SHE WATCH OVER US
HER LIGHT SHALL GUIDE THE WAY

Hanamura steps forth, stalwart, but trying to keep her emotions in check, holding a bouquet of flowers. She speaks.

"We come here today.. to celebrate and mourn the long missing, and likely deceased.. Marisa Kita. Daughter. Friend. Zoner.

On Earth.. we had a saying. 'You never know what you have.. until it's gone.' For me.. Marisa and I spent quite some time together.. but sadly her travels, oft kept her away from home. To me.. a part wishes, I could have come with her. That Marisa could have seen.. the great women that Mieko and Jae-un have become, as they integrated into our physical world. To see.. my diligence, and will.. to see our home through one of the most tumultuous times in its' history.. and.. to possibly have at least.. been there.. for us, as my calling came to be.

Marisa was true to the Zoner way - seeking peace and exploration amongst the stars, curiosities abound about so many things. Thanks to her.. she had showed me so much. Taught me so much, about this once strange.. dark world -- in a time of my life where the only friends I had.. were the two next to me right now. Marisa.. reminded me so much.. of home. And my yearning for my family.. to be with them again.. to be whole once more. Marisa.. satiated a part of that. That joie de vivre, that optimism and hope for the future and tomboy attitude. That.. is what I fell in love with her for. What made me hang on to every hope to see her just one more time after she would venture into the black."

Hanamura stops for a moment, trying to keep her composure as tears slowly start to manifest from her eyes in the chilly yet bright weather.

"No longer. Once again, this cruel world sent another into that good night. One who didn't deserve to go - when so many heartless.. monstrous people still linger amongst the living.

But. We shall not let Marisa go into that good night. We shall rage for her, rage against the dying of the light. In our hearts, even of those who have not met her, through tales, memories and name alone, we shall keep that flame alight. And as she burns among the stars like a star, she shall preserve us -- in the hopes that one day, the powers that be will reunite us all."

Nodoka, holding back once more, recites an old Freelancer's poem, her voice cracking as she does under the emotional stress.

"Eyes forward, pilot, the waypoint is not yet set.

Consider your armament, your shield, and hull before you undock,
for the waypoint is not yet set.

Burst into the jump hole and witness the universe before you,
for the waypoint is not yet set.

Set your ship to fly towards the nebulae while you wait,
for the waypoint is not yet set.

Pay attention, pilot, for those who have gone before you
call for you to join them."

Holding back tears, and keeping sobbing at bay, she utters the final line.

"The waypoint.. is now set."

Struikas, as Hanamura lays down the bouquet, comes forth. As she ascends, he places a warm hand around her in comfort. He utters a phrase common in the Legion, but here, holding significant, unique meaning - a blessing of the deceased.

"Libera te, ex inferis. Non omnis moriar."
Liberate yourself, from hell. Not all of us will die.

"From the stars you came, to the stars you will go, as will we all. You brought these women into our lives, and passed us the baton. We.. will carry it willingly, into the night - ever greatful for your gift. Thank you, Miss Kita."

Alexei comes forth to give his words.

"I remember often seeing her.. coming and going from the Freeport. After Nodtviet's assault.. she was one of the first to come to our aid. 11 was her home. Such a small place in our hearts, made all of the difference in the world. Dare I say.. were it not for her bringing Hanamura to that place. We would not be here today. Нехай зірки там будуть ласкаві до неї та покладіть її на спокійний сон. Нехай твоя пам'ять спочиває тут, у серці Зонерів, на ґрунті, багатому любов'ю, життям, радістю. Як ти дав нам. Спочивай з миром, товаришу."

He lays down a circular patch, encased in a hard plastic - the former seal of Freeport 11. Mieko and Bride too come forth, bearing parting gifts. Mieko, laying down the white obi from her old kimono she wore in her first days amongst the physical world - And Jae-un, her old shotgun's magazine. As the two rise again, Bride gives the two-fingered Harpy Squadron salute. "Rest easy, Mari." she says, as the group moves to depart.

Here lies the memory of one who binded fate beyond her wildest imagination. And from it, friendships flourished and were born.

Hanamura's office was host to her in uniform in somewhat casual nature, feet propped up on the desk, eating a pair of roast beef and cheese sandwiches, and a side of au jus. A large meal, until you realize she had spent the past few days too busy to eat anything but small snacks. She watches from a catalogue of old shows from her youth, primarily from the 2000s and 2100s that her father had raised her on.

She would take a bite of one of them, finishing half of it off after an initial bite. She finds a guilty pleasure in being able to enjoy herself in such fashion, able to relax for once in what felt like forever. However, before she can enjoy more of the morsel, she hears a knock on her door which catches her both offguard with a brief shudder, and subsequent groan. "Why can't I just have a break.. who is it!?" she says, irritatedly.

A male voice responds - Kensington's. "Ma'am, the interview with Major-Aspirant Basinger?" He says, muffled by the door.

Hanamura runs through her mind before uttering a sigh, exasperated by her exhaustion causing her to forget. "Right -- proceed."

The door opens with Kensington and a Brown-haired Libertonian following behind him. Hanamura had since turned off her shows and put the food aside. The two stand before her and render a salute. She stands and renders the same salute before ordering them to ease.

"Ma'am, this is Major-Aspirant Nate Basinger--" Kensington says, before Hanamura is met by Basinger's hand to hers as she moves to shake it, him taking strong initiative.

"Nodoka Hanamura, to say it is an honor to be in the presence of living history, it is.. absolutely beyond just an honor. It's the opportunity of a lifetime." he says excitedly, before introducing himself. "Nate Basinger, PhD in Xeno-Archaeology, Pre-Colonization History and Dom'Kavash studies at Cambridge."

Kensington follows up. "Former DSE scientist. Briefly consulted on some LSF programs out at Prudhoe - he approached us since.. well.."

"Your story is a fascinating one, ma'am. Being frozen for 3/4ths of a Millennium - were it not for Major Song's affidavit with confirmation of trace amounts of xenon and polyvinylpyrrolidone in your skin when you and her met, along with the Alliance records of your birth and the reports from Project Homeland, I would think you were insane or a clone, but.. it's real." He says, the excitement not dissipating from the 30-something xeno-archeologist's visage.

Meanwhile Hanamura, long since having grown a bit tired of being Miss Exposition, proceeds to simply nod and give a smile. "We can talk about me later, right now - you are the star of this discussion, Basinger."

Kensington nods as he continues. "He'll be the one overseeing Task Force Nochiu-kanto. The expedition out to the Earhart Sector and research on Dom'Kavash artifacts for military and civil applications." he says, explaining the newcomer's purpose.

"Right. Quite the important role you have here."

"Of course, ma'am. I.. do have to say I'm impressed by how professional you keep things here - though your Military Science classes at Tokyo U must have worked wonders."

"Yes, yes. I do have to ask though, how equipped.. would you say you are for this role? What did you do at DSE?"

"Nothing too exciting, occasional Omicrons research projects that more or less amounted to stare at the same couple of rocks and tell us if they do anything or point us toward anything that does something. My experience with the LSF was much more exhilarating. Helping continue innovations on jump drive technology, the occasional nomad technology integration project. Everything one would expect from the LSF's research and development teams."

Hanamura nods affirmatively. "I see. That being said, have you been briefed on Nochiu-kanto?"

"Yes ma'am. It's to be a two month expedition onboard the ORS Nishashin, wherein me and my crew will undertake an exploration of the Earhart Sector in search of resources and intelligence of use to the cause. I do hope unlike last time, we'll be able to come back in one piece." Basinger responds, before following up. "I hope you won't find it a bit crass of me to say I personally wish I could undergo research on the situation in Coronado, with regards to the Jericho anomaly."

"I'd like that, but right now the Auxesians, Libertonians and Crayterians are all over it. It'll be there when you get back, and in the meantime we'll run analyses of the planet and vicinity to see what exactly is going on."

Hanamura continues on, looking to the two men. "Gentlemen, Nochiu-kanto is an important endeavor in pursuit of exploitation of potential Dom'Kavash and Slomon K'hara technology to our factions, and society's benefit. There is much out there that could win us the upper hand on the Keiretsu and their Kaigun hounds."

Basinger expresses a bit of concern. "I.. fear if we do pursue weaponizing this technology we could paint a target on our backs, especially from the house intelligence communities, the Auxesians.. possibly the Nomads themselves."

Kensington chimes in, scratching the back of his head. "Yeah. There's also intel we have from the XRT finally on the new Tau system, 61. It's riddled with squids. Vagrants or main hivemind, It won't bode well for us if we have them, and possibly Auxesia, breaking down our door."

"Auxesia has bigger problems. Like Maria Uhmen and Liberty's puppets in Crayteria if the Skidbladnir's SIFC reports are to be believed. And the aforementioned Jericho." Hanamura retorts. She looks to her display, and brings up the Nochiu-kanto Orders.

"This will be the first test in a long time of the old FTL communications system the Harpies left us with. I hope it will remain effective and we should be able to get a sufficiently decent connection between Sirius and the Earhart Sector for the duration of the mission."

"Surprised they still work." Kensington answers, folding his arms, before sighing a bit. "Can I be real with you for a second ma'am?"

Hanamura, remembering the incident on the Skidbladnir with herself, nods in affirmation.

"I miss Elena."

Hanamura nods again, affirmatively. "You and me both. Maybe someday we'll go visit her. I know Mieko got a chance to last year."

Basinger doesn't involve himself in the personal affair, looking around to show deference of the matter to the two. As they conclude, he chimes in. "Miss Graham aside, Is there anything in particular you are seeking out that we should focus on?"

"Other than general curiousities, anything that could aid and abet the cause's interests. Focus on anything that could bolster force mobility, projection and power. Especially if it could be a trump card against our foes." Hanamura states to the two, bringing herself to lean back in her seat once more, exhausted.

"That.. being said, I'd like you to reach out Basinger, to that Civilian research firm, The Starfliers. See if they may have any equipment for the Nishashin's endeavor." She says, looking to a picture of her family from home on the wall, replicated from data from her memories as a result of the Elysium incident. Basinger acknowledges her with a salute. "Yes ma'am. I do hope to talk with you on personal matters at some point. I'd greatly appreciate it."

Nodoka waves her hand a bit. "Yes, yes. We can discuss when you return. I assure you. Dismissed."

Basinger seems a bit dismayed, but doesn't let it faze him as he steps out of the office. Kensington follows suit. "Hanamura." he utters, at the doorway.

"Hm?" She says, looking to him from her chair, lounged.

"Promise me we're not over-exerting ourselves with this." he asks.

She nods. "I wouldn't commit 50 of our brightest and 40 on defense if I didn't. Numbers have been up on recruitment in recent months, don't you know."

He sighs, still looking out the doorway. "Yes ma'am." he says, acquiescing to the situation.

The feed cuts suddenly to a video feed, of Hanamura at Freeport 8, working her way to the Citadel Bar, a popular drinking spot for the many businessmen who call the station 'home' away from home in the houses. As she walks in to the somewhat regal place, she finds herself gazing briefly at a Kusari lady of the night, a brunette, promiscuous and seductive in a somewhat revealing tube dress. She seems somewhat reserved, but still striking a pose, as if it were routine. She takes her place at the barstools, in her usual bodysuit, covered mostly by a dark fleece jacket, trying to keep her cool, having met with someone before for an arms deal on the station, now well on its' way to the Seraphine.

She sits at the bar, keeping to herself, and watching the holoscreens, witnessing the reports of tensions between Rheinland and Kusari starting to brew. The bartender, a young dashing, black-haired Breto-Kusari man, approaches. His gaze is briefly upon her chest, but he manages to re-establish professional decorum. "What'll it be, Miss?" he asks her as she looks on at the screens and then to him. "Oh.. uhm, Sidewinder Fang, two shots of peach and some pretzel bites." she responds. He gives an affirming nod, and goes off to prepare the drink at the wrap around-style bar, and notify the cook.

The woman from before sits two seats away. She looks a bit destitute - still somewhat young, still retaining that beauty and exuberance, but yet.. feeling like she has no purpose, no meaning, beyond her profession. Hanamura can't help but look. She stares from the side for a moment, to get a view of her. The woman looks on at the stars outside the windows of the bar beyond the dining area, gazing at the twin suns in the void beyond. Hanamura looks back to the screen, before the man returns with a drink for her. She gives her thanks and sends the payment to him wirelessly via the neural lace. He looks to her, and approaches. "The usual, this time Setsuna?"

She answers, a thick Kyushu accent escaping her lips. "No.. Just.. I need some sake." She says, somber. Hanamura's heard that kind of sentiment before - bottom of the barrel, at the end of it. The man simply nods and goes to grab her drink. Nodoka meanwhile, moves one seat over, taking her drink with her.

Setsuna notices the stranger. "If you're wanting to know if I swing that way, the answer is yes but I'm not available." she says, assuming she wants her body. Hanamura immediately dissuades the suggestion. "No. I just.. saw you were in a bit of a dour mood." Hanamura answers, setting down the field of discussion.

Setsuna seems to not want to engage her. "I don't want to talk about it."

Hanamura meanwhile, can see something in her, and rebukes with a consensual retort. "Well then, I'll just stay here until you leave or tell me." she answers, a bit jokingly, before drinking down the sidewinder fang a bit, sipping from the glass bottle.

The man returns with Setsuna's sake, a floral, grape aroma coming from the large glass. Before Setsuna can respond, Hanamura pays him for it, as before. Setsuna looks to the courteousness of the stranger with a bit of paranoia and some appreciation, at least. "I don't.. get why you seem so intent to talk to me, but.. I can't say I'm not thankful for you covering the bill."

"Thought I'd do something nice for someone that seems to be contemplating the end." she answers back, hitting right at Setsuna's dilemma. She goes to drink down a sizable amount of the Sake, as if preparing to vomit out her sorrows.

"Well.. since you want to play therapist.."

"I.. left the GC after they lied to me about.. well.. the cardamine. I wasn't told until our induction ceremony.. we all were subjected to it. Two years ago. Ever since I've been trying to survive.. and before that I ran from home, doing the same thing then, that I am now.."

"Selling yourself for money."

"And Cardamine."

Nodoka looks to Setsuna with pity. "I'm sorry to hear that."

Her kindness is somewhat alien to her, in a sea of people who would see her as an object. Ages of selling her body for money, the initial pleasure long gone, replaced by regret, remorse and a longing for what could have been. "Thank you. I.. worked hard to get money to attend a school. I was one of the best in my class in high school.. and had to worm my way through so many messes.. just to try and get some sort of life to make a change. Wanted to join the Chrysanthemums to make a difference after I was introduced to them through a sorority.. but.. you know how that went."

Hanamura takes her hand to the girl's back, rubbing it a bit. Setsuna could tell she wasn't an ordinary Kusari. So distant and cold, they could be and yet she radiated a compassionate disposition to a complete stranger. Outside of Kusari, such kindnesses tend to get people in chains, ice baths, or worse. In Kusari, you'd just be considered weird. Setsuna however.. welcomed the gesture. She felt like she could confide, for some reason, in this stranger.

"It's a cruel world out there. And I can tell you're worth so much more than your body." Hanamura says, as the bartender returns with the bites. She moves her hand away and to her side of the bar, continuing to look to Setsuna.

She looks back. "What's your name, anyway?"

Hanamura gives a gentle smile. "Hanamura Nodoka to iimasu."

Setsuna looks on at her, a bit surprised. "I.. I know you. You're that girl who broke out of the Kishiro headquarters in Oita four years ago. You're on wanted posters across the entire house.. You even somehow became administrator of that Freeport out in the deep Omicrons. The one the Order threatened to blow up."

Nodoka gives a nod. "Mhm. And yet, bounty hunters don't try anything, because--" she says, as comically enough, one tries to approach from behind and grab her, only for her to reach for a combat knife sheathed on her leg's side, and jabs it back into his thigh. He winces in pain as it penetrates the thinly armored suit. She downs the rest of her drink, and takes the bottle by the neck and bashes it against his head, knocking him out cold. A compatriot drags him away, as Nodoka goes to sit back down.

"People who do don't tend to last very long." she says, having noticed his approach on nearby CCTV cameras in her peripheral vision, by way of her neural lace's HUD.

Setsuna grimaces at the sight a bit, before looking to her again. "Good to know.."

"Never got your name, though." she says, returning to her old smile.

"Kobayashi Setsuna."

"I see." Nodoka comments. She wasn't anyone important, or special. But she knew she was at the end of her rope, and Nodoka probably could be the one to offer her such.

"Well.. If you want.. I could have something for you." she continues, with Setsuna drinking some more before turning to her. "What.. some sort of Zoner corporation, hauling cargo..? Possibly to be kidnapped and held ransom by Corsairs.. dragged back to the GC by Outcasts and executed..?"

Hanamura shakes her head. "Iie. Something.. more your speed." she says, as she in the meantime, ran her name through Mieko, who returned academic and other records on the lady of the night before her.

"I think you would have good potential as a diplomat. I have formed a cause to take back Kusari and re-establish it as a democratic, progressive republic. A shining light on the hill of humanity, hands held with like causes amongst the stars. And a girl who has seen such hardship.. and knows so much - is perfect to serve our cause as a spokeswoman and envoy." she says to Setsuna. She is somewhat speechless.

"This.. this is a joke, right?"

"No joke."

"If.. that is the case, I hope you have something to base this cause from beyond some rickety gunboat or old liner.." she says, questioning the legitimacy of Nodoka's offer.

Hanamura scoffs a bit. She stares briefly afterwards, hailing the Seraphine's bridge via a text datalink. "Oh you of little faith." she says to Setsuna.

"Believe me.. we have more than just that." she answers, taking some bites of the food, before stepping up, and away from the bar to the windows at the end of the dining area, looking on at the two stars in the distance, their harmful light radiation shielded by the filters upon the windows, so guests can enjoy their brilliance. Kobayashi looks on at the sight. Moments later, she notices a black dot form. It grows.. like a tear, blue hues within, spreading open, as if reality itself were being ripped through. She slowly starts to get up, and moves closer to the edge of the bar area, overlooking the steps to the dining area, outward to the window.

Hanamura turns around to Setsuna with a small grin from the other side, as Setsuna proceeds to run towards her and the windows. A vortex forms around the tear, clouds of particles forming as a sleek vessel plows out from the rift. A deep, sonic reverberation can be heard, like a horn, as the ship comes out of the now obvious, slipspace tear. The ship as it comes out, becomes more and more visible, coming into existance like a child from a womb - An Aquilon-class Aviation Dreadnought, making itself known to not just Setsuna, but all of Freeport 8. As she approaches her, Setsuna looks on at the ship, only a few miles from the station, but to her, could feel as if it were right in her face. Snubcraft launch from the aft flight decks embedded in the hull, serving as the ship's escort. Falchions and Stilletos galore, with occasional Spatials and Claymores on Fighter-bomber roles.

Nodoka speaks up. "How be your faith now, Setsuna Kobayashi?"

The Abdicant Seraphine stared Setsuna, as did Nodoka, dead in the eyes. She saw her fate at the bottom of a glass, dead from cardamine withdrawal, in some bathroom stall somewhere, diverge. Now, she was left with two choices -- a pitiful, graceless death, or a potential future that, even if it failed to pan out, would at least be a last hurrah.

For the first time in years, a genuine smile came across Setsuna's face. She knew which path to take.
