To: Adelaide Richter From: Technischer Direktor Elias Morgenstern Division: Unioner Research & Signal Intelligence Subject: Dual Assignment – AI Contact & Deep-Space Relay Design
Guten Tag, Frau Richter,
I’ll be direct, because I know you prefer problems over ceremony.
What you accomplished with the EC AIs did not go unnoticed. Repurposing an electronic warfare suite into a functional, two-way communication framework was not just clever — it demonstrated an instinct for systems thinking that is difficult to teach and even harder to replace. You didn’t force the signal. You listened for it, and then you spoke back in a language that they could tolerate. That matters.
Because of that, we would like to formally assign you to two parallel tasks.
Assignment One – Gammusian AI Contact
We ask that you continue and expand your work on artificial intelligence communication, with the long-term goal of establishing stable, non-hostile diplomatic contact with the entities commonly referred to as the Gammusians.
You are not expected to rush this. In fact, we strongly prefer you do not. Observation, pattern recognition, and controlled engagement will be more valuable than speed. Your prior method — adaptive signaling through reconfigured EW architecture — will remain your primary toolset. You will have discretion in how far and how fast you proceed, provided all findings are documented and shared with Research Command.
This is uncharted territory. That is precisely why it suits you.
Assignment Two – Davos Deep-Space Communications Relay
Separately, we would like you to design and oversee the installation of a deep-space communications relay at Davos Base.
Davos presents a number of complications that we believe you are uniquely qualified to address:
• Persistent radiation interference from the surrounding cloud
• Dense and anomalous signal traffic within the system
• An unstable Champagne jumphole
• Persistent compatibility issues between Gallic and Sirian communications architectures
The objective is not merely to “boost signal strength,” but to create a relay capable of filtering, translating, and stabilizing cross-border communications. If successful, this will significantly improve our ability to coordinate logistics and trade with the Unione Corse, particularly in relation to Gallic Nox, armaments, and civilian goods.
We are aware this will not be a clean or elegant engineering problem. That is intentional. Davos does not need a textbook solution — it needs a stubborn one.
You will be given access to Davos Base infrastructure, Unioner fabrication support, and any recovered Gallic comms hardware we can lawfully acquire. The final architecture will be your call.
If you accept, transmit your preliminary thoughts when ready. There is no deadline yet — only a need.
Work carefully. Work honestly. And don’t let anyone tell you something is “impossible” before you’ve had a chance to break it apart.

Oh, Guten abend Herr Morgenstern.
This is- well, unexpected? Hm, Well, I suppose it is time someone else takes over some of the backroom work here, the skill could use spreading around, if nothing else a few cruiser or gunboat crewmembers could stand to know how to read incoming before the name shows up on the scanner... Not that we frequently run into cloaked ships but I have heard of such? I dread running into them...
But I digress. I have been experimenting a little in my down hours, not that I generally take a lot, but I have not had reason to- I like the digital puzzles I am given infrequently a little too much, so if you say you have another such puzzle for me- twice, even? I will be there at the earliest opportunity.
I have a... query regarding this ahead of time, I know the project is technically hush-hush but the syndikatsliga does not have a wealth of computer science technicians. Now, I imagine we would all be a little richer if we all knew a little together, but I will likely put together a group to help me sift through the digital scraps we can grab from Gallia, then. I imagine solving this issue first- or at least teaching some new workers how to handle the less wrench-and-spanner side of shipbuilding will equip us better to tackle this puzzle. So I was wondering if the research division had anyone better than myself at teaching someone the basics?
I am a-... I don't have confidence in myself as a teacher. A team player? Yes, but I.. Hm, well, I tend to derail conversations pretty frequently, judging by some of the more socially active arbeiters I have had the pleasure of working alongside.
It is a foreign language that I got lucky with. And since kernel-level software is another language to most, even if we all interface with computers on the regular with our terminals, a proper software engineer seems like a ~sauberer~, that is, a wizard, to people who have only passing insight. And if we can get a-, well, it is unlikely, but a xenoarcheologist who could work with us? Even with the sensitive nature of our work, I need at least someone who has some experience decoding unknown languages, I can see patterns in code but there has to be a better way to communicate with the G.A.I. that we could likely extrapolate beforehand. I imagine the solution lies in software. Broadcasting bogus code that shows intent rather than, uh, 'execute' intent, you know what I mean, I imagine.
As for the comms relay, we likely have hands- well, on hand. And the expertise to make such a thing, but I think we can, since you are letting me, take the time to make sure others can duplicate what we are doing here- at least given time.
But, hm, and I hate to imply that we cannot, erm, procure what we need but I there are a few outsiders who may be able to procure things we need 'legally'.
There are a few names that come to mind that I've seen on advertisement boards while passing through places such as Heisenberg recently.
Anyway I will head out once I have handed of my regular duties to someone who will be here for at least a while, if I am to head off to Zurich of all places.
Hm. Well, if you have someone to send ahead of time, I have a list of things they need to get familiar with they can pick up on the way over if they stop by Krefeld.
I'll be making a stop by the freeport over in S-15 to talk to someone first.
But you know how to reach me, obviously, and I will keep our infobanks updated, of course.
Thank you for the opportunity

To: Adelaide Richter From: Elias Morgenstern Subject: Re: Research Assignment & Davos Relay
Guten Abend, Frau Richter,
Unexpected is often where the most useful work begins. I’m glad you see it that way too.
Let me put one concern to rest immediately: you are not expected to shoulder either of these tasks alone, nor to become something you are not. You were selected because you think clearly, because you recognize patterns others miss, and because you apply restraint where it matters. Teaching style and polish matter far less to us than clarity of thought and patience — qualities you already demonstrate, whether you credit yourself for them or not.
Regarding personnel: you are correct. The Syndicliga does not have an abundance of trained software engineers, and pretending otherwise would only slow us down. Research Division will assign a systems engineer with formal instructional experience to work alongside you. Their role will be to translate your findings into foundations others can learn from — not to override or dilute your work. Consider them a bridge, not a supervisor.
Concerning the Gammusian AIs, your instincts align closely with our own projections. We are not seeking to issue commands, nor to transmit executable intent. Broadcasting symbolic structures, patterns of curiosity, restraint, and non-operative logic is the correct direction. This is less an engineering problem and more a linguistic one, and you are right to treat it as such.
A xenoarchaeologist would be ideal. Access will be limited, but Research Division is exploring the possibility of bringing in a single external consultant under strict compartmentalization. If you have specific skill profiles in mind, submit them through secure channels. Names can follow later.
On Davos Base and procurement: your discretion is noted and appreciated. If certain components can be acquired legally but indirectly, we will not ask unnecessary questions, provided the documentation remains clean and the supply chain quiet. Submit a requirements list when ready; we will assess what can be sourced internally and what requires alternative methods.
Your focus on reproducibility is exactly what Davos needs. A solution that works only once is not a solution at all. Take the time necessary to ensure that what you build can be understood, repaired, and rebuilt by others.
Make your stop in S-15. Hand off your current duties properly. When you are ready to proceed toward Zürich, transmit your ETA and the list for Krefeld. I will ensure someone is sent ahead with the proper clearances — and the patience to listen.
This is important work, Frau Richter. Not because it is secret, but because it will outlast us.
You have our trust. Use it carefully.

Guten Abend, Herr Morgenstern
I have handed off what I can, and some equipment should follow one of my fellows heading to Krefeld within the day, and I am heading out shortly.
I admit I am a bit nervous especially because this is work that might outlast me, software is something we continue to iterate, moreso than alloys and schematics, little increments, and in our time, with the assurances it should need no debugging after the fact... Though that's never the case, but it is the mentality with which shipbuilders of our day proceed.
We will have to see what further adjustments need to be made, especially in regards to Gaul hardware-software compatability.
For the time being I will get ready and likely ask someone to help me find what I need later, once I have a clearer picture of what I'm dealing with.
I am of a mind to send for the... 'man' who sold me the hardware I made the measurement probes out of. I am picking up a delivery from him, the last of the things I acquired last time he was in our stretch of space, he's got a storage compartment waiting for me on freeport 8. I was going to use it for one of the new artisans we put together but it should be more useful for some preliminary readings, so we can figure out what we're w- Hm?
...Oh yes, yes, give me a second
Anyway, whomever you will be sending will have a handheld terminal with some subjects we need to workshop over so they have time to prepare.
Like a... a base minimum for anyone who'll help here, could also be varying levels useful for the rest of the union to learn from but I doubt anyone has the interest- it's niche.
For now, I'm off to pick up the last of these 'planetform sensor probes'... I question how this 'Lusus' got a hold of things the Bretonians don't even sell... as far as I know.
Anyway, I'll be reachable again once I hit Davos Base, I'd rather not some eager policeman hear anything he shouldn't off of my vessel.
I will be there as soon as is reasonable, and now I should probably stop making the transport pilot wait.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen Adelaide Richter
