Bretonia Mining and Manufacturing (BMM) is one of the largest commercial concerns in Bretonia, a network of semi-autonomous operations that range throughout Bretonian space. Alongside Bowex, they form an industrial partnership and conglomerate that curries favor with the government and secures the lion's share of government contracts. Their particularly poor working conditions in Dublin and beyond led to the establishment of the Molly movement, a thorn in Bretonia's side to the present day, and the Independent Miners' Guild, the largest non-aligned mining organization in Sirius and one of BMM's chief competitors.

BMM has grown from a government-subsidised company to an integral part of the Department of Trade and Industry, with diverse commercial interests across Bretonia, the Taus, and the Omega systems. Ever since the early days, employees have been mining and constructing ships, infrastructure, factories, and industrial products, most of the time under harsh working conditions, to make BMM what it is today. BMM's shares are entirely owned by the Crown, making the corporation nationalised like its partner Bowex, and giving the Bretonian Government control over appointments to the Board of Directors and the setting of company policy. This is exercised through the company's Royal Charter, and by weekly meetings between the BMM Board of Directors and members of the Department for Trade and Industry.

The cataclysmic events that took place in 831 AS, in Dublin, drastically affected Bretonia's economy. Aboard Graves Station, BMM senior officials were gruesomely executed by the Molly extremists using pickaxes. The killings were intentionally broadcast to instill fear and panic among the Bretonians. In response, Battleship Essex quickly launched a boarding force to deal with the Molly terrorists. The boarding force of the Bretonia Armed Forces was led into a trap as the terrorists planted explosives beforehand, activating them as soon as the Armed Forces finished boarding the station, murdering brave soldiers of the Crown, whilst also killing themselves. Simultaneous suicide attack on the New London Gate forced the Battleship Essex to withdraw from the system. The Government of Bretonia issued a statement, stating that the withdrawal is only temporary, in hopes of mitigating the potential backlash. In response, the Bretonian Authorities imposed a blockade over the Dublin entrance, suffocating the Molly supply line.

833 AS
The Gold crisis reached its peak, with market analysis indicating that the majority of Bretonian exports consisted of recycled materials, which was the result of stockpiles running low. To prevent further economic collapse, the Dublin situation had to be resolved. Neglecting to take action due to the cost-to-risk ratio, the unsatisfied ex-miners and other unemployed workers began protesting, demanding that the authorities intervene in Dublin.

834 AS
Aiming to bring the Kingdom of Bretonia back to the Dublin system, the Bretonian Admiralty allowed the use of military equipment without prior approval to all Bretonian corporations. BMM took this opportunity and outfitted its security division with military-grade equipment.

Galway Frontiers, sponsored by Planetform Inc., spearheaded the Bretonian return to Dublin, and a secure corridor to the gold fields was established. Suddenly, what seemed to be an unsolvable issue became an opportunity.

The sudden positive shift in the cost-to-risk ratio was enough for BMM to begin sending its miners to extract gold from The Founder's Gold field. Even then, BMM was heavily criticized by the public for its slow response in taking action in the Gold crisis.

836 AS (present)
With LD-14 being fully operational, BMM is slowly shifting its focus to Leeds and its vast deposits of Uranium with the intent of fully dominating the MOX market.

The majority of BMM assets remain focused on gold extraction. Mined gold is then transported to the Lisheen Facility for refining and later transported to Thames Outpost.

In the Omegas, namely Omega-7, the BMM division is deployed for wildcat Silver mining, spurring conflict with local companies such as Kruger and Daumann.

In Tau-23, another BMM division is deployed for the Niobium extraction. The J. Fendall - a Bretonian heavy patrol ship attached to the 9th Royal Cruiser Flotilla under the command of the Battlecruiser Livingston, is primarily tasked with responding to raids on nearby BMM and Samura mining operations, and resisting Gallic influence as a tripwire force. The J Fendall has command responsibility for the small Bretonian garrison housed aboard Scalpay Outpost

COMPANY STRATEGIES

  • Domination of the MOX market.
  • Total control over the Leeds resources.
  • Suppression of the Molly threat within the Dublin Gold field.
  • Expansion of BMM's reach towards Taus and Omegas.

STATIONS

Portsmouth Shipyard: After the Gallic War's conclusion, the Bretonian government was forced to evaluate its long term options for the construction of a military shipyard. Despite the symbolic and cultural value of Southampton Shipyard, it was ultimately determined that the cost of recovery and the wider strategic position made a New London site infeasible.

Following the Glassing of Leeds, Bretonia's reduced ability to adequately secure the Tau frontier would place a repaired Southampton at unacceptable risk in the event of a future war. Similarly, it was deemed unacceptable for Aland to continue operating as Bretonia's main military shipyard on anything but a short-term emergency basis due to its exposed location and inadequate facilities. After a protracted deliberation period, a decision was made to develop a new installation in Cambridge, orbiting Planet Sarum.

The Construction Ship Fenland was deployed to handle this task, hauling large sections of the new shipyard consisting of individually constructed modules. Each module is hauled to the construction site to be welded together.

After a lengthy construction period which saw non-Bretonian participation, even from BMM mining rival Daumann, the shipyard was completed in late 827, and was officially named Portsmouth Shipyard in a ceremony observed by the monarch. The shipyard's completion has made Aland no longer required for shipbuilding efforts, with most of the production being moved over to the far more capable Portsmouth.

Redcarr Refinery: built by BMM in 827 AS. Like Belfast Station before it, Redcarr's primary purpose is the refinement of minerals mined on Middlesbrough, an uninhabitable but mineral-rich moon. These minerals were more important than ever to rebuild Bretonia's devastated infrastructure in the aftermath of the Gallic Invasion.

Redcarr was thus hastily built and its workers driven hard to continuously increase output. Remembering well the mutiny that led to the loss of Belfast in 750 AS, Redcarr is well staffed by political "morale officers" who ensure potential disloyalty is promptly reported and dealt with. BMM also closely coordinates its patrols with the BPA and Bounty Hunters Guild to deter Gaian, Outcast, and Molly attacks.

LD-14: The Uranium Processing Center stationed at LD-14 was a vital supplier of MOX to the other colonies, generating significant revenue for the Bretonian government. Despite the harsh conditions on board, the salaries offered to those willing to serve ensured a steady supply of workers. However, the center faced frequent attacks from terrorist groups attempting to obtain weapons-grade plutonium, which added to the already hazardous working conditions. As a result, security measures were heightened.

Following a reconstruction period that lasted until 832 A.S, LD-14 is now fully operational in the Leeds system. Its reopening not only relieves fuel pressures on the house but also provides a valuable source of exports, particularly with the situation in Dublin.

Thames Outpost: An old space station from Bretonia's age of expansion, Thames was designed to function as a hub for in and outbound cargo for Planet New London, and a storehouse for BMM Gold exports from Dublin. In 826 AS, Thames found itself in the middle of the Battle for Planet New London, the largest fleet battle in human history. It is believed that Thames survived the battle with minimal damage because Gallic forces had intended to use the station as a staging depot for a terrestrial invasion once orbital space had been secured.

With the loss of Graves Station in 831 AS, Thames saw a sharp drop in traffic, although some Gold continued to be stocked as a result of confiscations by the Essex blockade. When the Battleships Essex and Somerset were sent for overhauls in Cambridge, the BAF temporarily requisitioned the Outpost as a patrol base. Following the 835 AS Invasion of Dublin, BMM has resumed Thames' administration, and has begun constructing smelting facilities in anticipation of a surging stock of Gold.

Douglas Station: Douglas Station is owned and operated by Bretonia Mining and Manufacturing (BMM) for the manufacturing of Polymers and Terraforming Gases using the abundant raw materials in the system. Security around the facility is abnormally high due to frequent skirmishes with Corsairs.

Peterborough Mining Facility: Peterborough is a Beryllium mining and processing station recently established by Bretonia Mining and Manufacturing to take full advantage of the Beryllium deposits discovered in the asteroid field north of Planet Cambridge. Most of the Beryllium processed at Peterborough is being shipped by Bowex, BMM's main shipping partner.

Ah, finally, the Master's Whip has returned to lord over the Bretonian Slave Cage.

Hope to see more of you guys in game!

When contending with a monster, you'd be wise to give the devil his due.
