Jump Drive failure consumes Freeport 35

Freeport 35, Edinburgh

The Niyodo Files claim their first victims. What looked to be a bloody and drawn-out battle between Freeport 35's defenders and local Gaian garrisons, assisted by Maquis heavy assets, quickly took a bizarre and horrifying turn. According to scientists stationed on the ZDF Hinaichigo, roughly forty minutes into the battle, scanners detected a massive energy signature welling up within the installation, consistent with the activation of a hyperspace device. A few moments later, Freeport 35 vanished from local space, leaving only a few now-useless weapon platforms drifting around, and both sides momentarily befuddled. Given the newfound precarity of their situation, ZDF vessels and their allies ordered a full retreat.

"What the hell were they thinking?! We were winning and these idiots destroyed the station!" exclaimed Bernard Hobbs, lead researcher of Freeport 35. "What kind of imbeciles disobey orders and activate an unfinished Jump Drive like that? We've never seen Tomoe this angry! I'll be lucky to still have a job here by the end of week. Not to mention the hundreds of people that were still on board."

As of this writing, FTL communications specialists within the ZDF are still unable to reach Freeport 35. One of them tells us: "Even if the base somehow survived this, it was probably relocated far from civilized space or any sort of infrastructure, making a successful rescue unlikely."

"Really sorry for those who couldn't evacuate, but at least this shows that our dark matter backflow inhibitor works," said a senior ZDF scientist who chose to speak on condition of anonymity. "If that half-done Jump Drive they triggered hadn't just been outfitted with it, those morons would have spewed a cloud of dark matter the size of Gaia straight into Edinburgh."

We would like to extend our condolences to the families and friends of the crew members lost in this tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in these difficult times.

Word from Zoners I know is a bunch of the core crew were lost trying to stop the fiasco, and the guys who did it were dead before the station.

Condolences for this terrible malfunction. Sad

That aside, why were we exchanging weapons fire with the Gaians in Edinburgh to begin with, not trading with them? Did we really need more enemies in Bretonia?

We don't all want to have to watch our step everywhere we go in this sector.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE FREEPORT 35 INCIDENT

The Utsunomiya Commonwealth expresses its' condolences to the loved ones of those lost aboard Freeport 35. Whilst our government engages actively in simulations and experiments involving the Niyodo files utilizing the best minds Zoner Society and Sirius at large can afford to us, we kindly remind our neighbors, Zoner or otherwise, that this technology is unstable and extremely hazardous in the hands of those untrained to operate, maintain and develop it. Whilst we are certain Ms. Kashiwaba and her men are more than capable, let this be a reminder of this technology's volatility.

To our understanding however, this likely would had not happened were it not for the flagrant aggression of the immature Gaian movement, attacking a Zoner installation that to our understanding, had no intention or desire to tread upon Gaia, let alone engage in any activities that would raise their ire.

Our government demands an explanation for this attack upon the installation and why the Gaians decided to attack a base that could have very likely turned all of Edinburgh, including their precious Gaia, into a sequel to Fischer-1171 if it had gotten any worse.

The device was a black market one we purchased to remove from circulation.
I cannot stress how dangerous these devices can be without proper safety measures.
Much like reactors in every single vessel, if used wrong enough they become WMDs.
One of the work crews whom were among the evacuated personnel had been working to rebuild the device with proper safety measures as a training assignment, and were nearly complete at the time of the initial evacuation, the devices mass was increased by about three times its starting weight with added safety features designed to inhibit the function of the device if the safety devices themselves were not also functioning properly.

Based on security footage that was broadcast to my vessel, three junior scientists whom had declined early evacuation panicked the first time a single stray shot struck the station, and due to the station being mostly evacuated were able to break into the workshop where the device was being worked on, and connected it to the stations power grid.

Based on the readings, it appears that all of the safety measures functioned properly despite the measures they took to try to activate it and move the station, the last telemetry reported the darkmatter flushback suppressors ramping up to 30% for approximately thirty seconds as the device charged, due to the station itself not being properly setup to function with such technology.

The most likely outcome was that wherever the station emerged it then proceeded to explode due to the device being tied into a ships reactor.

The reason most operators of these devices use batteries is because if something does malfunction, the device is on its own closed power system and any major feedback can be solved by simply jettisoning the battery compartment via explosive bolts and built in thrusters.

Anyway, I need to go back to writing letters, especially for the brave security forces who breached the workshop and dispatched the trio seconds before the station vanished rather than run to the escape pods.
