"The Unforgiven Legion exists because we do not forgive easily. The Free Legion exists because we are not incapable of it."
- Alliance Commander Damien Morreti, Formal Proclamation on the Establishment of the Free Legion
Overview: The Free Legion did not exist until one man made it necessary. Established by formal proclamation of Alliance Commander Morreti following the exoneration of the pilot formerly designated "Craven", the Free Legion represents the institutional answer to a question the Unforgiven Legion had always implied but never resolved: what happens to those who actually earn their way out? The Free Legion is the answer. It is not a replacement for the Unforgiven Legion, which continues to serve its function as a penal assignment for disgraced Commonwealth defectors.
Rather, it is the tier above - the destination those Legionnaires are nominally working toward, and the proof that the destination is real. Its founding member, now operating under the callsign Gallant, serves as both its first officer and its most visible argument. He attacked the Prime Minister of Kusari in open space and brought her down. The Alliance asked him to strike a blow for the future of the Independent Worlds, and he did not falter.
Composition: The Free Legion draws exclusively from the ranks of the Unforgiven Legion. There is no direct path to membership from outside. A pilot must first have served under the full weight of the Legion's penal designation, distinguished themselves through acts of exceptional valor reviewed and confirmed by Alliance leadership, and passed the reintegration process in full. What this produces, in practice, is a unit of vanishingly small numbers and disproportionate capability. These are individuals who survived the Unforgiven Legion's assignment tempo, who demonstrated initiative beyond the scope of their orders, and who have been evaluated, scrutinized, and cleared.
The shared history with their former unit creates an unusual cohesion - not the camaraderie of equals, but the particular understanding of people who have been through the same fire and come out the other side with different names.
Equipment: The Free Legion retains access to the same Commonwealth legacy technology and defunct Legion armaments that define the Unforgiven Legion's loadout. The Prosecutor series remains their primary fighter of record, and Inquisitor-class gunboats continue to serve in fire support and boarding roles. What changes is the maintenance priority and operational latitude afforded to Free Legion pilots. Where Unforgiven Legionnaires operate under strict equipment supervision as a condition of their penal status, Free Legion pilots are trusted with the full discretion of regular militia officers in managing their craft. The tools are largely the same. The hands holding them are no longer under watch.
Mission Profile: The Free Legion is not assigned the same mandatory high-risk rotation that defines Unforgiven Legion service. Instead, its pilots are attached to operations where their unique combination of experience and proven reliability is most valuable - high-judgment engagements that require both technical excellence and the capacity to act without direct oversight. The attack on the Kusari Prime Minister that created the Free Legion is the clearest illustration of this profile - an action that required a pilot to assess a strategic opportunity, accept total personal risk, and execute without waiting for orders. The Free Legion exists to cultivate and deploy that quality deliberately.
Standing: Free Legion pilots are recognized as full members of the Alliance Militia in good standing. Their prior penal designation is formally expunged upon induction. They retain, by choice or by custom, awareness of where they came from - many continue to operate with the same callsign patterns they carried as Legionnaires, the derogatory prefix stripped and an honorary name in its place.
Allowed Equipment: Xeno tech (Excluding ships), and defunct Legion technology (Liberty blackmarket ships and guns).
Membership is by exoneration only. Inquiries regarding the Unforgiven Legion and the path to the Free Legion can be directed to the Official Faction's feedback page.
