Yeah this guy isn't new around here. With sightings of Sextus.Pompey going back months or longer.
Though Badmins have run a little rampant when dealing with players and the naming of ships and possible unjustified actions in regards to this first FoB siege. This guy got what is coming to him and couldn't stand it. Wither he couldn't understand Outcasts were there purely to cause trouble and engaging only the attackers on the first day. Running around as a Bezos gazillionaire. To thinking he could siege the base as an unaffiliated, and undeclared party of the siege. His actions couldn't stand unanswered, and he refused to reach a logical conclusion of what he did wrong.
As the one who brought up the naming debacle, the others are correct.
And Rantari has been here for at least 9 years, not new. And he was extra egregious about it.

i will say, in that the staff saying there is a naming theme (there isnt) among aliens that are generally nameless, and assuming vagrants/khara are the arbiters of how indies name themselves is a WILD reach. in reality, nomads are just 'unknown' or a generically callsigned ship. their methods of communication simply do not communicate with human ships. so if they have a name, a human gave it to them. or it was generically assigned (alien 1, alien 2, unknown 1, unknown 2, what have you) as whatever the IFF system in your ship wants it to be. but assuming khara are the naming theme now, do i need to rename all of my nomads that are not mesopatamian? ive got names from other mythologies. ive got super generic nomads too. some overlap with the order Egyptian naming themes. am i in danger?

this crackdown on even the tiniest bit of whimsy or names that 'might maybe possibly have a 1% chance of being a troll' has been one of the most toxic things to happen to the community as of late. this push for a severely serious RP environment enforced by the pain of the lash of the rules will just see more people bowing out/making throwaway characters for PVP. please reconsider.

I think one of the most frustrating things about situations like this is feeling wronged and not being heard, so I wanted to make sure to put aside some time today to hear you all out and respond to give a bit of reassurance and closure to this.
So regarding the situation around renaming characters, clearly this wasn't handled amazingly and not only felt like it came out of the blue but also happened to have some horrible timing with the siege ongoing and happened to have a knock on effect with that. We did go through a period of time recently where the community felt like we were being too lax on people making meme/joke name characters and that it was ruining the roleplay immersion, so we did clarify that we'd be trying to curb that moving forward, however even with that being said I still think there's a tactful way to do that by communicating with players, which wasn't how this went down here.
There was an additional point raised about the Nomad name situation and this caused a lot of confusion, which I have spent some time clearing up with people already, however just to be clear the main requirement is that the names are appropriate and of a roleplay nature for Discovery, as long as there is a reasonable effort to meet these requirements then people can name their characters as they wish.

I'll touch on this one briefly too as it is here. We are actually very lienient on new players because we generally try give them the room to make mistakes/learn the server rules and help them learn rather than lead to sanctions. After all, in a community this old we generally want as many new players as possible to be able to enjoy and make the server better. This person wasn't a new player (as others have pointed out) and generally ignored previous attempts to get them to behave, so the team decided that a sanction at this point was the option. We don't enjoy sanctioning people (I'd say it's the worst part of doing staff positions) but sometimes we do have to. Personally I am quite disappointed that we couldn't work things out with this player and resolve the situation without resorting to this, because generally I feel like we can work out things with most people without resorting to sanctions.
A final thing I would like to touch upon whilst discussing this though is about communication. Fully hear and understand the want for more communication from a staff point of view, whilst I think we (and especially I myself) have made changes to try increase communication/visibility, I do have to point out that it's not entirely uncommon for people to be rather abrasive with members on the team. Please do remember that there is a human behind that username and they're spending their free time to try contribute to this place to make it keep working behind the scenes, for no benefit of their own. Please try to be kind to them. A huge part of why I spend time today typing this out is because I want to have that communication with people and speak to people as if they are friends and not from a position of authority.
Being a volunteer in a position like this is not a fun experience and involves a fair amount of stress. As a team we're constantly having to ride the line between being too strict vs letting too much go, and to this day I still hear people say we're both at the same time. It's never going to be perfect, sometimes we might end up being a bit too heavy handed and other times maybe something will slip through, the only thing I can promise you though is that making any decision isn't easy and involves a lot of unseen work behind the scenes to make it so, a lot of that work is never seen by the community at large and only the end result is visible.
This has, and will be, a learning lesson for individuals and a team as the whole. I hope that gives you some reassurance that this wasn't just swept under the rug or that your feedback was disregarded, because that certainly is not the case and I wanted to see it addressed, hence this post and the follow up work being done within the staff team.
To finish, I'd just like to say I apologize for this being such a frustrating situation and that I hope that this has given you some reassurance moving forward. I'd like to remind anyone in the community that if they have concerns or issues they want to see addressed, my PM/DMs are open and I will strive to fix as many problems as possible to make this place better.
