hi

i just have some questions about the general ability to make these amendments. I'm assuming it will be very hard without the source :-

1) How hard would it be to boost server capaicty to about 500? Reason Im wondering is because the map is quite large and at 150 players I felt maybe we still need more people running aroun in the space lanes (maybe increase numbers of NPCs? see next)

2) How hard to increase number of NPC ships runnign space lanes?

3) How hard would it be to mod it so that clicking on a players name on the HUD opens a chat window to them directly?

3) Finally --- There is no way to introduce actual economic pricing is there...? I'm not sure if digital anvil even left hooks in the code somewhere.

I suspect all of the above needs source but i was just wondering...

They would be good ideas though?

Possible, as Jazz said, but improbable. That amount would kill the server pretty well.

Wouldn't a 500 server cap push the server far past its capabilities and push the code WAY past the maximum settings the original coders meant for the game?

The original was 128, we've already gone past that.
What purpose would pushing the limit up to 500 serve? We have yet to hit 200 people. Increasing the limit doesn't mean more people will magically appear on the server.

NPCs are generated when there is a player in the vicinity. You could have 100 NPCs appear but it would probably cause a bit of lag for the server if everyone was doing it and some slow down on your computer.

Jazz is incorrect. This one is possible, Shattered Worlds implemented a dynamic economy. Go check them out.

I'm guessing it works on the same principle that Ioncross Total War used. An auto-updater type program that modifies your game files in line with the server.
Speaking of which, an auto-updater would be a great addition for Discovery. However, a topic for another thread.

Nope. It works completely server side. Look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qENJaWkKSbc

W0dk4 got an FLHook plugin working for dynamic economy?

Nice. However, it looks like it'd be a full time job for at least two admins swapping things around, unless a script were made to randomize prices within a set range for each commodity...Hmm...*has an idea, but no way to implement it*

SW uses FLAC so beyond what we're told its doing, we don't know much due to its closed development and obligatory donation.
