I have not only seen, but been involved in some amazing RP. A lot of the good rp, imo, is done in private chat because rpers done like to spam system.

Good point. I have had some -awesome- RP in private and group chat. Just check the "intercepted transmissions" from Jacob's defection to the 522nd. (in my sig, Jacob's Defection 2.)

Not advertizing, just showing some RP done exclusively in private comms. As it was necessary for the situation.

Its not about fairplay or roleplay. Both have their place, and both are needed depending on the situation.
I didnt vote because both duels and overwhelming force have their place.

That problem that you struck was more about consideration for other people.
You can still be a nasty pirate and in character,
but also at the same time be considerate of other people.

This is what my rant was about awhile ago, and what joes rant was about as well.
It's the being considerate of other people thats lacking. We do have plenty of RP, and we also have plenty of "fairness" on the server.
However, many times "fair" is not a good way to play, but you can be "unfair" and still be considerate.

People forget that they are playing a game. And they take things far to personally. You die? move on. You win? move on. There's no need to sulk or flame or brag. But when a person gets ganked. then ganked... then spat on and told "Im gonna report you!" then it is time to have a break - as you did., but remember that most of that wasnt your fault.

Generally speaking consideration for other people will take you a long way.

My point I suppose is that it is perfectly possible to be in roleplay, and play fair to people at the same time. Infact, the roleplay becomes a lot more fun when you are fair about pvp. Sure, getting a kill is a lot of fun, but I would regard it as being low and pointless in game terms when your enemy is vastly outnumbered anyway. Also, the fewer people there are shooting at you, the more chance you get to actualy enjoy the roleplay.

Be fair on people, it may well stop your assumtion of someone being oorp pvpwhores, if you gave them a chance to speak.

EDIT 2: I want to point out I haven't voted, nor shall I. I don't see it as one or the other.

Hmm, I voted for Roleplay, though I'd prefer if there was an option that let you "mix" them. First, because everyone has a different view on what is fair and what is not, the people losing are almost always thinking it was unfair, no matter what happened. Don't deny it, you know it happens. As for mixing those two things well..people here mentioned reinforcements and all that before. That is very good. But if you say see..2 fighters, and you have 4 fighters and 2 gunboats available. You send those 4 fighters in, and what if they lose? Should fairplay dictate that you have to let those 2 who won, run amok and kill or pirate or whatnot? Or should you send the gun/missile boats in. I'd send them frankly, both of them. There are a lot of loose ends in these discussions, in fact it is a pointless discussion just because everyone has their own opinion on both roleplay and fairplay, so a conclusion can never be reached. The best you and everyone else can hope to get is that the person on the other side is willing to balance things out, or at least give you a chance. I frankly don't want to balance things out, I'll use Talon as an example, he wouldn't sacrifice his men for fairplay, and no other person in RP should. I will of course give the opponent a chance, I won't send caps in a fighter fight unless absolutely necessary, but I won't let the pirate fight my men one on one, when I can send 2 or 3 fighters on the pirate. Though not more than 3, that's unnecessary and it would lessen the overall effectiveness of naval patrols, because let's face it, there's always more trouble, and an entire fleet going for one guy is ooRP as much as sending one guy after one guy.

Indeed, Titan. There's absolutely nothing wrong with sending a superior force to neutralize an enemy. What you do need to do though, is give the other players some kind of a chance at victory.

This is a game, remember, what's wrong with the lawfuls losing? What suffers?

Every situation differs, I see nothing wrong with any of the examples you provided. Those situations would be fine in any case. You send a superior force to win as an upholder of the law and safety of a system, but you don't send so much that in RP, your resources would accordingly suffer.

I think the problem most people (myself included) throw at Liberty is the fact that although the LN or LSF will put a modest number of units into a battle, three more independant capital ship pilots will come in and join the mayhem. Telling them to bug off isn't something that's done enough, because it usually turns what could have been an amusing skirmish into a rout.

Role play and fair play go hand-in-hand.

So long as you recognize that YOUR role play does not supersede someone elses. If you consider your role play more important then you are not exercising fair play.

Role play means you're putting yourself into the game AS the character you play. Your role play should be enjoyed by yourself AND the person you are interacting with. If you are the only person having fun ... you might want to ask yourself what your motive is for playing? If you are the only one having fun ... are you a bully? Are you here to pound on others? If so ... you're not role playing ... your here for PVP.

So ... if everybody's having fun ... it should be both fair and in character.

Orin, we do order them to disengage quite often, their reaction is something we're going to try and handle soon with some rather drastic meassures.

Good point Orin.

What I'd like to see is the house militaries, police, etc spread out a bit. You go to Liberty and the entire fleet is somewhere near Manhattan ... all the while there is no sign of military, police or security forces to be found in Colorado, California or Texas. Then again ... the only time you see them out of New York is when they are huddled above Houston, Texas.

Go to Rheinland and you'll find the same in New Berlin.

Kusari and Bretonia ... well ... they're pretty much non-existent.
