OK, so i am having a problem. here it is
One day i came home and i could not log on the internet, the cable modom says everything is up and its logged on my Pc. But, everytime i go to get on the net or log to a game, it says i have no service. So i format my hardrive and stat over with a new install of windows xp. Then to discover that i can only stay logged on for exactly 1 hour after the pc starts up. so now i loose connection at the same time every hour. Then i came home today. and come to find out that i cannot log onto the internet or any game server on any of my games. So i format and reinstall windows again. Now i'm here.
So, anyone have any advice on what may be happening?

EDIT: whoops, i think this should of probably been in the support thread. Sorry!
since it keeps happening im thinking a hardware problem,
try a linux live cd next time it happends and see if you can get on with that,
if you can then its a windows problem, if you cant then its hardware
heres a link to a small but nice live cd, hope you can burn cd's
ping your router while you can't connect to the internet.
Also, in the LAN properties you should have a look at the Details tab and see if your computer registers and IP and Default Gateway.
I doubt it is the OS, more likley to be on your ISP's end or your router. If you can. Try switching your routers with a friend and put your details in to make it connect to your ISP.
If you can't you can always try connecting straight into the model without a router if you have a router. If you don't then for the above suggestion it would be "modem" and not "router"
If your router isn't the problem in the end and the Internet and/or DSL lights are solid, try pinging your NIC card. If you get a latency above 1ms, there is something wrong. I will get the default IP for your NIC card to ping as soon as I find my other post.
Hope this helps a bit:cool:

its an on board ethernet controller. i have a pc chips motherboard.
But after reading your suggestions on what it may be, i think its my mobo. it has been through alot in the last 3 years. including four different power surges. witch required repair at the pc repair store, twice. But the odd thing is that i can only stay logged on to the internet for only one hour, i could be typing this up or playing a game and after my pc being on for one hour it kicks me from anything that requires the interent and then i can no longer get on it, unless i restart my pc, witch is getting really old, i want to play Freelancer but i'm afraid because i may be in a pvp fight when i get kicked. and then get sanctioned. or if i'm downloading a new program or what not.
Anyway, i'll listen to a few more suggestions before i make my desicion to buy a new computer.
If its built into the motherboard, then the NIC may not be getting the voltage it needs and dropping its service all together. This especially happens with modular power supplies or built-in surge protectors.
All up, your NIC chip is on the way out. You can pick up a 1000/100/10 Ethernet Card for under 20 bucks now.

I've had that problem a few times, but i've never had to reinstall windows, my suggestion would be to check your firewall settings, and check your router settings, they might be clashing with each other. if you need to, just unplug your router and cable modem for 30 seconds, then plug in the CM then the router again. and see if that fixes it
Everything is cool now. After a double drive format, and fresh install of windows xp. it all works like a charm, well, at least for now. But, thank you for your help!
