Back on topic: most of my ideas come from reading fantasy novels, reading D&D sourcebooks (FTW!!!), a combination of the above, or my own, deranged mind.
My characters all come from my imagination. I usually start off by drawing them, then if I like the image enough I'll give them a name, then I stick them in a story and develop their personality around how I would react in that situation. Given I only really have unlawful characters here, it's little wonder most of my characters are really similar.
' Wrote:Curious about how others go about thinking up new characters. I've gotten them from many sources... TV, movies, books... More recently I've been browsing sci-fi/fantasy image sites and saving character pictures which particularly strike me, then start pondering possibilities for that character.
How about you folks?
My four main characters in the Satarae family started with Kurosora. [In order by age.]
Kurosora, who pilots the IMGS-Black_Sky, is most like me. Moderately competitive with an occasional temper problem.
Talia is basically a space amazon. She's viscous in a fight, but isn't blind to the dangers. She's also cautious and open-minded, as they all are.
Elaiya is much less aggressive. She's a medic and has only shot down Terrorists and Nomads. She's got a love for human life, so long as that love isn't abused.
Lastly, Olivia, who is by far my favorite, is based off a person I know in real life. She's kind most of the time, but not someone you would want to make mad - the guilt itself would kill you.
A way a lone a last a loved a long the riverrun, past Eve and Adam's, from swerve of shore to bend of bay,
brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs.
Vero it means: to be in truth. I thought it fitting for a server police name back on the Raw server. The name stuck with me when I came to Discovery and created my first character here who eventually became John Vero: CEO of Liberty division, Synth Foods Inc. (and of course my admin name too)
All other names have been picked at randon from various sources such as:
Edmund Dantes see The Count of Monte Cristo (and my Avatar)
Del Spooner: see the movie I Robot (to avoid confusion after Reverend Del became an admin I changed this one to Robert Neville)
Robert Neville see the movie I am Legend
William Owen the actual name of a British Royal Navy officer from the 1700s
Critical Error just thought it was a great name for a trade ship; it currently is mothballed while I work on other things
I used to be schitzophrenic, but now we am definately one people.
Usually it's just an idea that grows. Name comes first, then the story forms. Then the affiliation comes naturally.
Only time that hasn't happened is with Fortunatus Wright. Set him up specifically to join the Privateers when they formed. Named after a famous British privateer of the c.18th. Was playing the character for quite a while before the story started to form, and I started posting. A long time has past and it's still forming.....
Interesting thread - cool to see how everyone's minds work in different ways.
I have a few characters, Ive been trying to figure out how i came up with them:
One big happy family:
Corsair Ben Laowai - My first character on Disco. He's an indie, and fiercely so - kind of because I'm a little like that and so i worked it into his nature. But, he is, like me, fairly pragmatic - So he does what needs to be done. His name came from my "joke" Chinese nickname which was actually "Ben Laowai" which in Chinese translates pretty literally as "stupid foreigner". With a Chinese sounding name i made him a half Kusari/Corsair which gave him more of a story (Corsairs being the tolerant bunch they aren't). From there it just went - his story is by far my longest one and has the most depth.
Isabel Ren_Laowai - er... yeah, obviously related to the guy above. She came into the story through him - now with her own backstory and some fairly detailed intelligence work on her resume. The "Ren" part of her name comes from her husband who is:
Ren-Shifu - "Matthius" Ren - I needed a trader (dont we all?) and he was it. But as trading is god boring awful i wanted him to have some kind of personality, i also wanted to tie him in with my main character somehow as his transport was going to Gamma (food runs and "can you help me with a transfer" before FLhook liberated us) so i had him married to Laowai's (then non existant) sister. Ren- Shifu actually means "Ren master worker" in chinese and this was one of the drivers names who used to work for my company in Beijing. He was a funny guy and never seemed stressed, so i modelled the character on him... except he is from Planet Houston so.. he is kinda a bit southern' y'all.
Donny-Ren - Son of Isabel and Matthius. I wanted a smuggler, he became it. He is also Texan so if you meet him in game he will talk like his father. but he is a lot more devious.
They were all related... my other characters kinda just came from me wanting some variety of character type on the server.
[NLH]Ocean - Or Toby Neptune. I really wanted to play a character who was a surfer dude.. i mean like Keanu Reeves/ Bill and Ted, or as Marburg said, the evil surfers from Point break - and that meant he HAD to be a Gaian.:).
XA - Retribution - Adam Greerson. My Xeno in a GB (//ZOMG a ZNO in a Liberty GB u r so OORP! I sankshun Jooz!!) I wanted to play a xeno and i had a charismatic, educated borderline - sociopath idea for a character.... Adam is the result. He's just as likely to propogandize you in space as he is to shoot you.
Where do they come from? meh... dunno, they seem to just fit who i want them to be!

Ok then--the next fighter or bomber or gunboat for the Gaians should resemble a large surfboard. Perhaps with a "statue" standing on it with an outstretched hand and fingers pointing. Beams and missiles could shoot from them, the eyes and mouth.
