I think battleships was in FL ment as multiplatforms carrying land troopers and space fighters with ability of bombarding planet and destroy another battleships or cruisers.

Cruisers were ment as support vessels for battleships, their duty is kill gunboats and assist to battleship against another battleship.

Gunboats were ment as cruiser suport - fighter killers and asisting vessels.

Main force are fighters because they are able kill any cap without problems if that cap havent supportive vessels.

My 2 cents:

1-It is not worth comparing FL to other games. Each game is different and meant to be enjoyed in different way. So some are based on Cap ships, some are based on Fighters.

2-It is useless to compare FL with RL. In WWI the queens of the seas were Dreadnoughts. In WWII Carriers with Planes, now.......I would say still Carriers, but I think in the future it will be submarines with hundreds of Cruiser missiles, and remote controlled planes

3-Guys let's be honest. Many people like to fligh Caps. Only after flying a cap in FL you discover how useless they are against a bunch of bombers.

I would say, that production of a battleship would take far more resources than production of some bombers able to take down that battleship. And try to repair it. Smaller ships can be repaired fast with little resources while big ships can make you bankrupt.

So while thinking logically numbers should be: |caps| < |fighters/bombers|

I wrote a really funny FL story, but it disappeared when the old forum went away. So, no lulz for you today.

Actually, I think that the SoaSE comparison with FL is a massive backfire. You see I used to play this game, and I can guarantee you that fighters and bombers still play a huge role in it.

With the psychic-ninja woman-only faction (forgot their actual name), build a fleet of carriers with some illuminator vessels in support , go for a 1:1 bomber-fighter ratio, a few capitals here and there and you're all set.

Really, swarms of hundreds of fighters and bombers killing a capital ship in little under 30 seconds really is scary. So, if anything, we should all be flying fighters, and only faction leaders should fly capital ships.

On a more serious note, I disagree with a comparison between two completely different games.

it depends how you equip them. My Harvester_52 (lunchbox) can easily solo a bomber.

but im as good as dead against 2 or more.


Now, are you saying your bomber can take out 2 bombers? no? then we're the same.

Going to start throwing things at people soon.

Why are battleships so useless in RL? They are easy enough to kill by aircraft and don't have the range of bombers etc.
However, stick a battleship in the air and boom, you have a bloody monster.
An aircraft that can shoot down fighters due to advanced targetting systems and lots of armour and also can bomb the living daylights out of everything on the ground. Now that is a plane.

Which is how a Battleship in Freelancer really ought to be. It makes Zero sense that a battleship should fall easily to a few bomber in space if it is properly made.
Why would the Sirius forces even construct battleships if bombers are so good against them?

This is not WW2. There is no air or water, only space. The key advantage that aircraft had over battleships was the fact they were in the air and it was in the water. Put them both in space and that advantage goes 'Poof'.
This is the bloody future people, why do we fix things in Vanilla FL but then use things in Vanilla FL as the norm? If that's the case, I demand we put back in the bugs since that's how it was in normal FL.

Honestly, Sindroms has a point, a very good one.




EDIT: Oh and McNeo, I simply build hordes of Disciple frigates and eventually replace them with Illuminator frigates mixed with Desdra Crusaders, plus some capitals. The carrier frigates in SoaSE go down far too quickly for my liking. Steamrolling your enemy is always fun too:P
