in theory - ships - even the small battleships all have spots that "could" in a way support such a gun/turret

the problem starts when people start fooling around. - when the put such a turret in a place that does NOT look good. - and you can hardly make a rule that says "put your turrets in a place that looks realistic"

the turrets as such should be maybe half their size ( not actual size, but half the size compared to the ship they have now )

right now ( 4.85 ) - turrets are still small. - i d say 1/30th of a dreadnought in size - while the ones you have attached might be 1/6th of the ship.

might be good to have some special turrets to be like 1/10th of the ship.

another problem is that - cause turrets are often small - shiphardpoints are VERY often placed mirrored left and right. - only few spots are centered. - but turrets like that would need centered hardpoint locations or would need to be placed sideways.




all that aside... :

a way to get such turrets into the game was to make them ship specific.

make them lvl6 turrets ( unused ) - and name them appropriate to the ship they gotto be used on.. - like liberty dreadnought main battle turret - define the one spot that they CAN be mounted in as lvl10, lvl6 hardpoints - and so a player places them into the one spot designed for them only.


but then - what should such a turret do? - more damage than a heavy mortar? - no way... or the same damage at a very low rotation speed - but ammo based, with blast radius and lower energy use but extreme ammunition cost maybe ? - thats a matter of future balancing.


but if we really wanted to put such huge turrets into the game - it would be possible, even in a reasonable way.

of course. Another option would simply be to size them down. As it is right now, the main gun of the beowulf is like 1/3rd a liberty dreadnaught, hahaha

size them down to something where the bases of each turrets can fit in the generic (I hope they are generic anyway) sized slots for battleship turrets and it should fix the problem. that would still make them look big, because FL turrets are neer larger than the circumference of the base of their turrets whereas those... hehe, you get it =P they are huge

Im for RM guns fit with RM BS, Lib. guns fit with Lib. BS etc. etc.... they could have same model just different sizes to look good.

but it have con. it need rebalance of all BS.. for example RM BS with biggest guns should have most powerfull guns but thats overkill solvable only by reducing of number of guns on RM BS.

Thats too much work and I dont believe that ever happen.

i dont think Lib. BS. Fit but RM maybe a little but they should be bigger, it doesent look good now.

4.85 BS use the largest vanilla models for Primary turrets of the respective faction.

So for example on Bret BS only 3 mounts are large enough to hold those without looking completely stupid.

Yes because you need to take the mount into account as well, the turret can't be much bigger than its base, neither can it follow curved surfaces or sit on top of window textures.

Razors as universal heavy guns, use a rather large turret model (custom) which is very much on the edge of looking ridiculous on the smaller battleships.


Remember this is Freelancer... not gundam-lancer. If the developers wanted extremely huge turrets, they would have made them.

no... well I duno whether you talk of gundam missile mod or the gundam mod in developement. The first is just about missiles spammage with high tracking, second is still in developement and barely has any model done yet.

In any event, mjolnir' right, unless we exploit the class 6 turrets.

I propose a complete rebalanced of the turret system:

Class 1 would be fighter/freighter turrets (Oh noes! A rhino with class 5 turrets!)
Class 2 would be transport turrets.
Class 3 would be gunboat secondary turrets
Class 4 would be gunboat primary turrets
Class 5 would be cruiser defense/tetreary/missile
Class 6 would be cruiser secondary
Class 7 would be cruiser primary
Class 8 would be BS defence/flak/missile
Class 9 would be BS secondary turrets
Class 10 would be BS Primary


Actually that worked out quite nicely and prevent people from placeing big guns in places they don't fit. (Which happens on Bretonian GBs and Cruisers already)
