I read.....A LOT. This forum has been great a interest to me. I've read stories, complaints, sanctions, reports, etc., etc. One thing I never see out of all of it is the "gentleman's rules." We complain about alot yet don't see a simple laid out example.

So~ ya'll know em, or at least can think of em. Let me start.

Way outnumbered enemy. To join against him or eat popcorn and watch? Don't raise you hand, we should all know the answer.

"//GF" common practice amongst players who killed or died. (I prefer something a lil more like "nice shot bud, you totally smoked me!") All in all, keeping a cool head and happy face makes the world turn better.

Raids...popular engagements, sometimes setup by factions to be fun, fair and equal! Better that way in my opinion, even though telling your enemy about your fleet is not really role play. Constant raids can get annoying, some out there do 4 or more to the same systems a day!

"Engaging" I probably stand with a bunch of people on my growing hatred of this cheap line. Petty insults for a few minutes works better. Announcing a lil more would be much more appreciated by everyone.

:):D;) equals :(......no smilies. Simple to the point. (and that goes for the dreaded "lawl" virus)

Rule lawyers....need I say more? take it to the PMs, give the guy a chance to learn.

Sanctions as the magic text says, it's not a goal, it's a last resort. That means try, try, TRY to help them understand their infraction, and if they're still doing it in a week or so, then report them.

So great people of the community, add, take away, argue, light torches and burn and/or guide the way. It'd be nice to have a "gentleman's rules" list somewhere.....Let's make one! I know there should be more, but I am not omnipotent today. Add along peeps!

There is nothing less conducive to the immersive atmosphere of this game than that bloody "//gf" message. Do it in private chat please.

"Engaging" is, frankly, unimaginative and cheap. And sanctionable in certain circumstances.

Yeah, many people think they're being nice when they say //Gf in system chat, but it's plain old annoying.
As Athenian said, it's mostly best to talk to people in PMs.

Also, about overwhelming odds, I find that it is in the limits of fair play if I am outnumbered at most 2 or 3x.
So if it's 2 of us, it's best if there's 4 of you, or if you want, 6.
But it is always preferable to keep caps away from fighters, except if the fighters fire on the cap, then it's perfectly ok with me if he fights back.

Also, when heavily outnumbering an opponent, please do not shieldrun or missile spam.
It is hard enough to fight 3 people by yourself without them showering missiles and shieldrunning whenever you manage to harm them a bit.

I will be starting a campaign for "guns only" fights soon. None of yer missile tomfoolery or yer sneaky mines.

Gentlemen prefer guns.

As Dieter once said, something about grannies and small forest animals. Right on, mate!

I completely agree, although when someone does shout "Engaging" at me, depending on the character I'm using, and/ or how mad I'm feeling at the time I'll usually give them some RP back, e.g.
"You're getting engaged? When's the Wedding? Will there be cake? Can I have some cake? I'll set you on fire if you don't give me cake!" (in increasing order of madness)

True, because the admins seem to think that '[Target-name], you are trespassing in [faction name] territory and will be eliminated' set as an automsg is better than 'engaging' for some reason I've yet to fathom:P

As far as player 'unspoken rules' rather than admin diktats, I'd consider the use of a missile fighter against someone not similarly equipped to be in poor taste, the same as using a gunboat against a fighter.

No longer active online due to a dwindling amount of non-PvP (trading, pirating, mining, etc.) fun in the new version.

Think of setmsg as a prosthetic for the slow at typing. Personally speaking, if yer gonna get shot up, ill take a standard setmsg anyday over "Engaging" - ors its variants "Enganging"(I'm not kidding) or "Enaging".

"Enganking"?

So...should someone in a gunboat wait until the fighters/bombers start attacking it to fight back? By then he will be dead. That would seem to be just as unfair. Since the fighters/bombers stay behind the gunboat so they cannot be shot at with all the guns.

Something to think about.

[sarcasm]Yes indeed, because gunboats die within seconds.[/sarcasm]
It ain't bad form if you attack multiple fighters or bombers with a gunboat, but chasing lone fighters with cruisers, battleships.. That most certainly is.
