Just a small question regarding the recent "Reunion Treaty" thread: does everyone agree that systems that bear namings of any particular House are sovereign territory of the House?

When naming the systems, I actually meant that they were explored and chartered by ships from the House that named it. Since there are no bases, stations or colonies of the House in such systems (Orkney's an example), how can it be considered part of sovereign territory?

It's strange that guard systems like Lewis, Saar etc can be declared their sovereign territory by the nearby Houses. Well, they can be declared so, but won't it sound ridiculous for a system fully controlled by unlawfuls?

I know that this thread doesn't really belong here (OORP) but since the "Treaty" thread originates from here, I thought that there are better chances to get feedback from here as well.

Personally I view all such annexations as frivolous powergaming, no matter how well they are worded, and I don't acknowledge their validity, nor even their existence.

Systems have no relationship to a House based on their name any more than America was "owned" by Amerigo Vespucci just because he drew up the first map of them a few hundred years ago.

I'm with Xoria, but from a slightly different perspective. Rather than frivolous ooc powergaming I see it as IC frivolous powergaming. Such as the Queen of Bretonia declaring the Taus to be the territories of Bretonia.

We can observe how well that worked out.

Nations are quick to declare any and all turf that they can secure "theirs" regardless of their ability to back it up. Bretonia, for instance, might be quick to declare that Orkney is their territory for political purposes but would be unable to meet a claim to the contrary and would furthermore be very hard pressed to establish infrastructure due to the large hostile presence there.

I think it's an amusing theme that fits in well with the imperialistic dogma maintained by most houses.

Anyways this is all academic, as the Xenos have already claimed that system for themselves.

When Columbus found America he claimed it for the Queen of Spain. Although there were no cities and the land was inhabited by natives, it became a Spanish colony.

If Bretonians first explored the Orkney system, even if they didn't find anything at first, they can still claim it as their territory. The basics of colonisation.

Agreed. Bretonia can indeed "claim" to have sovereignty over Orkney, but that doesn't mean that they can actually exercise power over it.
Good luck to them.
This is coming from someone who, IC, opposes the move tooth and nail.

To me, the bottom line is that Orkney has never been a part of Bretonia.

Any argument that Orkney (or Lewis for that matter) belonging to Bretonia simply because they share the names of a couple of Scottish Isles is an empty one. Edinburgh is in Bretonian space, Lewis is under total control of the Gaians & not subject to Bretonian laws, & Orkney is simply the buffer zone between the houses.

The 'Crown' never gave two toots about Orkney before, & now that it's center stage, they want it & I personally like the RP potential that is on the horizon here.

It's completely IC for the royalty to suffer from a bloated sense of entitlement & make all sorts of empty claims, but I think that we all know this quote:

"The more you tighten your grip Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers."
