Factions on Discovery

A faction on the Discovery RP 24/7 Server is an organization of players who have chosen to roleplay as a group, typically as one of the existing Factions that were "built in" in either vanilla(original, unmodded) Freelancer, or a faction added through the various Discovery modifications.

Driving down your favorite street is not much different from roleplaying on Discovery. When you drive down your favorite street in your neighborhood, an experience integral to the enjoyment of your drive is the scenery around you. You are one single entity in a large community that is interesting and engaging in part due to the enormous contributions that have been put in place in the community due to player factions. Beside the colorful nebulae, swirling clouds of space dust, and floating wrecks, players in Player Factions have made a commitment to be part of the scenery of Discovery for your enjoyment, and their enjoyment as well.

Player factions are what make Discovery completely different from most Freelancer servers out there. In fact, it would not be surprising if they were the reason why this server has been so successful. The concept of factions is that any player can freely join without fear of loyalty commitments or metagaming, something unique to Discovery Freelancer. In most Freelancer servers, "clans" exist. Essentially RP-less entities that are focused on PvP competition with other said clans, they function based on a powerful sense of loyalty and commitment to their own. While these are all positive characteristics, a serious schisms caused by intense competition in their respective servers have often led to their demise.

It is perfectly fine to join as many factions as you would like, though joining for the credits, then immediately leaving is highly looked down upon. One should also take care as to not overextend their playtime over too many factions. In addition, unless otherwise required by faction leaders, it is also perfectly fine to join factions that are in conflict. For instance, multiple players are in the LN and the RM, while there are Corsair/Outcast overlaps as well.

How is this possible? Faction gameplay in discovery is instanced, due to our heavy emphasis on roleplay. Each character played by a player often has a distinct personality, including some circumstances when the characters are significantly different from the people who play them. Metagaming is looked down upon, and most people on the server are relaxed enough to be relatively nonchalant towards the spread of information, etc..., though information gathering agencies do exist.

Player Factions on Discovery typically strive to do what corresponding NPCs in the storyline would do if and when placed into certain situations that are usually generated through player-player interactions on the server. For instance, this can range from enforcing blockades, piracy, insurgency, contraband interdiction, or even murder.

Factions are a unique part of Discovery, and an integral part that has distinguished Discovery FL in the multiplayer gaming community. Feel free to join a faction and to try it out, or feel free to be an independent character. While it is true that certain factions have imposed restrictions on independents for RP purposes, you will find that most of these restrictions are logical and fair in order to maintain the integrity of roleplay on Discovery. Nevertheless, do not let yourself be bossed around, and stand up for your rights as an independent if you do find that you are being unjustly restricted.

Enjoy your time at Discovery, and remember that respect is the most important part of being established here.

A good post indeed.
No rambling, no repeating yourself, nothing boring in a sense.
Just a good post with good feelings behind it.
Good to see such things still exist in Disco.

Good:)

Yeah nice job, personally I like being on both sides of a conflict. It mixes up your RP and lets you appreciate the other sides perspective.

An overwhelming majority votes for a pin, therefore it gets cleaned & it gets pinned.

Congrats Pierre.

Good post; nevertheless;

Don't give people ideas, because, as a citizen of the best place in the world to Sue for Happiness, I can safely say they're going to descend on the remnants of the great empires the factions used to have and tear them open yet again. The factions don't do that stuff, they never really did, and don't pretend the factions could get away with it if they wanted.
