I recently reinstalled freelancer after I discovered the mods that had been created for it. I Haven't played in years, and never played multi player, but this looks like it will be a lot of fun.
I do have a concern though; it seems there are rules for everything! I like playing a trader, but it seems as if I cant just buy X on planet A and sell it on planet B since rules tell me what and where I can buy and sell, which paths I can and cannot take to get there, what ships I can and cannot use, and if I mess up any of these rules then I lose millions of credits or get banned for 30+ days.
I am sure it is not quite as complicated once I start playing and get used to it, but it looks like quite the ordeal to get settled into the universe.
I read over the newbie guides that I could find on the forums, which answered some questions, but I still have a few more.
1. I think I primarily want to run trade routes, but sometimes I like to mix it up and go blow stuff up. It does not seem like good RP to just change lifelong occupation on a whim. So, am I stuck trading forever?
2. A couple of friends would probably start playing with me. The Discovery universe sounds pretty dangerous, and they like to fly fighters, so they would probably escort me around the galaxy (if we are permitted to travel through the entire galaxy) keeping me alive and I would split the profits with them. Is that allowed, or do we need to join an already existing faction and do what their higher ups ask? It seems at a certain level (40?) you cant just be a civilian cruising planet to planet and have to affiliate with someone.
3. The threads I read mentioned fines of millions of credits, pirates demanding millions of credits, etc. That is a ton of money! I am going to be starting out with 500, right? How am I supposed to get a million credits to pay a pirate ransom if everyone else in the galaxy is already flying a 50,000,000 credit death machine?
Overall the mod looks great, and I am excited at the prospect of playing on a multi player server. If someone could give me some feedback on my questions I'd really appreciate it.
If your a trader at heart look no further than Gateway Interstellar... ( shameless plug and recruitment :P)
We can set you up with a trading vessel and get you earning creds in no time.
Youll find it a lot easier to explore if you have some creds in the bank and in joining us youll get used to the rules and everything else that is going on with a great bunch of guys to keep you up to date.
We are resticted to where we can go but that doesnt stop you trading with one char to supply and outfit an exploration vessel!!
Oh and welcome to the verse. Watch out for the penguins and if anything bad happens its Zelot's fault

Not really, you can always make a few different characters. Trading is the most profitable occupation as far as I know, and, besides, it doesn't say anywhere that the trader can't blow stuff up. It's just more difficult.

Yeah, you can take your friends along (or even hire some bounty hunter, mercenary or freelancer) to escort you around Sirius. As for the level 40 not being civillian anymore.. well, you can maybe become a freelancer, or an independent trader, unaffiliated pirate... they all get around pretty much. Zoner as well. And, those are just NPC affiliations, that is, guide lines on how to behave in RP situations.. for instance, a trader is more likely (much more) to pay a pirate than is some mercenary in a heavily armed gunboat.

Well, for instance, the advanced train, which is the universal cargo transport, carries about 5000 cargo units. And costs 188 million credits. It can make some nice profit, much more than say, 2-3 million that a pirate might rob you of. Also, as I hear, most of the pirates around these parts aren't actually in it for the money, but for the sheer RP value of it. And I think you start with 8500 cash. And a 50M credit death machine would be a heavy gunboat. Try thinking about 895M Capship 8 Armor upgrade (increases hull points by 4 times). The first thing to keep in mind is Role Play comes before PVP, and that some people aren't very much aware of that fact, so you might get frustrated. About learning to role play, if you don't know allready, you might just watch other people do it, read some of the stories on forum, and generally, think about what you're going to do.
Edit: Think what would the NPC do in that situation.

You're right on the money, it's not that complicated once you get used to it.
Don't just lose your head in all the rules, but try to think about why they are they way they are, why they make sense.
For your trading, just pick a corporation you'd work for, or go as an independent trader(Get standard Trader ID), or go illegit(Smuggler ID).
But watch for cargo space limitations, independent traders don't have as good access to roomy ships as the corporations do.
Don't sweat it too much, just play. It's not really that complicated.
Oh and, you won't get banned for 30+ days.
Just don't go insulting people out of RP, swearing at them, using profanities and such, as there's children playing too, and it's against the rules.
That kind of thing will get you banned, but a simple mistake you might make won't result in a ban, and you'd probably just get a warning.
Feel free to ask me about anything you might need.

Well, you see, you don't have to have just one character.
You can always have multiple characters, the number's actually unlimited.
You can, for example, have one character who's a trader, one who's a Freelancer, the third a pirate, and so on and so forth.
Every account can have just 5 characters, so if you ever need more, you'll need to make another one and store it with a program called Freelancer Account Manager.
In order to make a new account, just do this:
Install Freelancer Account Manager(You can google it for the download link)
Enter it, so it saves your current account.
Make a new windows user account and switch to it.
Enter FL, go to Multiplayer, and get your multiplayer ID created.
Exit FL.
Enter Freelancer Account Manager again, save the new account.
You'll now have two accounts in the program, and can activate them by a simple double click.
You can delete the temporary windows user account after that.

That's of course allowed, you can create your own groups.
When it tells you that you have to affiliate with something after level 40, it just means that you can't be with a Civilian ID anymore.
You just need to buy any other one, depending on what you want to do.
Police, Pirate, Trader, Mercenary, Freelancer, and over 20 others, linking you to specific NPC factions, like the Liberty Navy, Outcasts, Corsairs, Blood Dragons, and many many more.
The thing about the "You must affiliate" means that you must join an NPC faction, meaning the tag and ID of them.
You have to understand the difference between the whole NPC faction, and a player faction.
There's a thing called "indies". It's basically a person who has an ID of some FL faction,
complies with the RP of it, but doesn't really have to listen to other human players.
You and your friends can form a little group of your own, of course.
You can for example use a trader ID, or some corporate trading ID, and your friends could use Freelancer or Mercenary ones, it's perfectly in RP.

Those people are fined credits depending on how much they have.
Anyways, don't worry yourself with getting sanctioned. Just use your common sense, brush up on the rules (With understanding!) every once in a while, and you'll be perfectly fine.
Anyways, those pirates rob people for sums of money depending on how much they have.
If you're a pirate, and you see someone, and know he's making 5 million with the route, you'll ask for say.. 2 million.
But if you see he's earning 500k per route, you'll rob him for maybe 100k.
It all depends on the situation.
Also, don't worry, there's a rule protecting people under level 40.
People can't attack or pirate you except in selfdefence until you reach a level over 30 or 40, can't remember exactly right now.
And don't worry about having or not having money, it all evens itself out sooner or later.
For getting startup funds, you can feel free to talk to me, seeing how you seem like a nice player, I can boost you up with a bit of cash just to help you get on your feet.
I also recommend mining Silver in the Colorado Silverton field and work your way up with bigger cargo ships up unto a transport.

Is that how most new players get up to speed? It seems like something is lost if you are just given a pile of money instead of building from the ground up.

Ah, I guess I never picked up that you can have more than one account. That makes sense.

Give me more details. Aside from the trading vessel signing bonus, what advantage would there be? This question isn't specific to your faction either if anyone else wants to chime in. Factions are basically a couple of poeple you can group together with to pillage, protect, or profit with, right?
Do a bit of research on what NPC faction your looking at playing as and act as they would. Develop a character to add some spice and personality to your roleplaying adventures.
Also.....you may want to do some research on "special" enemies you may run into, Mon'Star especially :D
' Wrote:Factions are basically a couple of people you can group together with to pillage, protect, or profit with, right?
You got it.
Though it's much more in depth than that, there's really a lot to the whole universe.
You can play for a long time and you'll never know it all.
Anyways, although I'd feel perfectly fine trying to recruit you for the Colonial Remnant, I'll recommend that you go independent for now, just to get a feel for the place.
It's a good feeling to build yourself up from rags to riches.

Most of the Rules involving trade are Roleplay-Rules such as Embargoes. You will suffer in-RP consequences for breaking them, but not get sanctioned. As a trader some of the things you need to watch out for are:
*Does the ID you are carrying allow you to fly that Transport? (Trader ID only allows up to 3500 cargo ships. Same with Smuggler and Freelancer IDs, but Smuggler ID also allows the Pirate Train, which can't dock on lawful bases.)
*Does your affiliation make you friendly enough to dock at that base? (A Universal Shipping trader wouldn't be docking on a Corsair base, for example.)
And never - ever F1 away from a pirate.
My suggestion for you would be to fly with a Smuggler ID. It allows you to do lawful trade, but also gives you more avenues of Roleplay by Smuggling. Either the Firefly or Pirate Transport would be a good choice of vessel.
Wow, thanks for all the replies. I am glad to see this forum so active. I hope the server is too. The FL universe is fairly large. How often do you bump into another player? I'd assume I am not going to see pirates at every tradelane stop, but what about every run?

I will read up on the difference between smuggling and trading. Smuggling does sound more fun. I would imagine a ship with 3500 cargo space takes a very long time to work towards. I like the "build yourself from rags to riches" idea that was mentioned earlier. What level til you can buy one? I'd guess it takes a few weeks of casual play.
' Wrote:And never - ever F1 away from a pirate.
I use F1 in single player to pause the game, but I assume in multi it does something else? Disconnect is my guess. Or some other dirtbag trick that prevents the pirate from blowing you up.

You'll bump into other players everywhere.
You won't see pirates in every system, but you can run across 2 or 3 depending on your route. The thing is to plan ahead, and if you have an escort that might lessen the danger somewhat.
Smuggling is fun. Doo eeeeet!
F1 is a disconnect from the server. Some lowly dogs use it in an attempt to avoid paying pirates, or to escape having their ship destroyed. This is a very big no-no on this server and leads to heavy sanctions.
Edit : I've been here nearly two years and don't know half of what is going on.
