I have never done much RP stuff, but I think I am up for giving it a try. It certainly seems like it would make the game make more sense and probably will be pretty fun once I get the hang of it.
It just dawned on me that time zones would have a big impact on active server population. Is there an established server time, and what are peak hours?
I am in GMT -6 (US CMT).
Having to hit your escape pod isn't too big of deal, depending on what you're playing. For example, my character with the longest hours on him has been in his pod a total of 4 times in the past year. I just don't get him into conflicts if I can keep from it. And he's one that I started from scratch, and just started trading with. If you don't join a faction, just be prepared to spend some hours trading.
Here's a hint - just because you can afford a bigger ship - don't get it. If you're in a trader that's a decent size - and it really doesn't take that long to earn a couple of million credits to buy a larger ship - then figure out how BIG of a ship that you want to eventually fly, and then save for it instead of buying an intermediate ship. For example, the Armored Transport is a decent sized ship. But once you get the money to buy a regular train - it may not be worth your while to spend the credits when you can actually save up for the Firefly.
The established server time is ... well, 24/7. At the absolute lowest time, there'll be 40-50 people on. And again on the weekends, it'll be totally full with 200 people online, with scheduled conflicts. (And by that, I'm talking about where we specifically have wars between the BHG| and Order, RM and LN, and other factions.)
I'm on US EST, so GMT -4/-5 (DST), and normally there are between 70 - 100 people on every evening between 7 and 10 pm for me.
Well, it certainly seems like you've gotten plenty of answers here. The one thing I did not see mentioned is that if you have a character that dies that character cannot re-enter the system for 4 hours or until the killer leaves. If you are a trader you are allowed to go back through as long as you do not seek out PvP with the person that killed you. It's a little complicated.
I would like to mention however that I run a chat channel on skype to answer all diso related questions and to help new players become better acquainted with other members of the community. Skype is also the primary means of instant messaging here. If you are interested there is a link in my sig.

Thanks everyone for the information! I am really excited to get playing. I will keep your Skype info in mind for when questions arise. I have my mother-in-law in town this weekend, so I probably wont get to actually try it out for a week, but I am looking forward to it. In the mean time, I'll see if I can persuade my dad and brother to playing again. They shelved the game the same time I did, but have been long time space sim fans.
