I like the idea, seeing the examples put forth by the Oracles and those folks who are part of the TAZ.

I say go for it, because to me, the absence of Religion in Freelancer, does not hint that Religion has died out, it just shows that the developers of the original game didn't put that much thought into a living, breathing, thriving role play universe.

So, again I say go for it, if there can be Christians in Mass Effect, I don't see why there can't be any other type of Religion in a similar game.

Besides made up religions, "real" religions exist in Discovery and Freelancer as well.
Read Malta's infocard for one example, it'll tell you that millions of Outcasts are Catholic.

What the hell??? I'm joining the outcasts right away!:P
