I've been looking at making a generic character, but hate pirating, and already have a smuggler. Vigilante, reseach, etc. all seemed too specific.
I'm looking at the differences between the Merc and FL IDs. I have the idea of what I want to do, I just don't know which of the two will suit it better. I'm mostly looking for differences in how they do bounties, missions, and are treated by other factions. Also what they can and can't do would be nice.
Mercenary = go anywhere, shoot anyone, dont worry about reputation
Freelancer = go anywhere, shoot anyone, dont worry about reputation
The IDs are basically the same; mercenaries are supposed to be a little on the shady side and can assist pirates, but in practice, you could fly one, be neutral to everyone, attack people outside lawfuls bases, do whatever you please. Find a nice neutral ship (the best ones - GMG bomber, eagle, civ bomber) and Bob's yer uncle.
Wait, according to that Mercenaries can't attack traders, except in self-defense or to defend their employers. How is it that mercenaries go about collecting bounties on traders/trade factions, then?

Aren't they technically being employed by the person putting out the bounty?
That would be my understanding. If you are attempting to collect a bounty then you are acting on behalf of the person putting up the bounty, a de facto agent, if you will. I'm sure the admins will clarifiy.

* Cannot pirate, but can provide security services for pirates who are pirating if paid to do so. Mercenaries can only fire on traders or smugglers in self-defense or if the trader or smuggler fires on the mercenary's employer.
