Missiles cause huge amounts of lag when compared to conventional guns.
Unfortunately as well as that there's the fact that missiles don't track as well with lag. That means a player fighting a player, no matter how good their connection is, will always have degraded quality in their missiles.
The missile effects were already increased for 4.85. One big problem with increasing them and making them any more fancy than they already are is that some people that play on Discovery have problems with the missiles the way they are now. Which is like this.
Now yes missiles and effects and stuff are all client side so it dose not effect the servers performance. But when you play on a 200 player server, when fights consist of 40 or more players all spamming missiles, that does effect your performance on your machine.
If we didn't 'rip off' other mods we would get no where, no mod scene would. Ideas get shared, taken, reinvented and implemented. Its how any type of modification works. And so long as you credit the author it isn't bad at all.
We can't be first to do everything, especially with a game getting on with its walker like FL.
