Pointless piracy...

Right, while I hate for my first post to be something negative, I'm at a bit of a loss after a few recent encounters with pirates. I won't disclose names or locations, as I'd hate to be the whiner, but it would be interesting to see if the rest of you have had similar encounters...
Whilst on a relatively standard trading route, my ship was intercepted by a lone pirate. Nothing unusual there. However, his sole demand made very little sense to me. I was ordered to drop my entire cargo, despite the several mil sitting in my bank, and the fact he was entirely out of room in his hold. And with my lousy loadout, staring down the barrells of a twin SNAC, in a ship with the maneuverability and grace of a thrown brick, I had little option but watch as my jettisoned cargo was destroyed in space. After all, resistance would have a similar result, only with the added cost of replacing lost bots/bats.
Two days later, an entirely different pirate gave me exactly the same treatment.
It's not as if I have anything against paying pirates in credits or loot, I'm usually extremely obliging. But the above scenario has already put a large dent in my profits, at no real gain to the pirates involved.
It doesn't make much sense RPwise either, as these pirates make their living leeching off traders. Surely destrying my profit margins without at least benefitting from the act is just damaging their own livelihood?

Any comments are welcome, I'd just like to hear your thoughts, maybe some tips on bargaining with them?

Cheers

(edit) Since several of you have asked for more info, and I was probably being a little too cautious with it beforehand, I'll clarify for you:
The pirates involved were Lane Hackers and Outcasts, and I was carrying Neon through California and Cortez, respectively.
Sorry about the general vagueness

It would help to know what you were carrying. Some pirates take afront to you carrying goods to or from their rivals or enemies bases. Also there is a few new groups that hunt smugglers so if thats what you were doing might have been one of them.

Xenos, maybe?

Or perhaps you're running a route that offends the local pirates. Feel free to divulge more detail as it'd give a better picture of what's going.

Just no names is all.

If it was a Xeno or an XA character, they did exactly what they were supposed to. As a matter of fact, Xenos are not allowed to accept credits from a trader. The Xeno's main concern is to stop all goods going in and out of Liberty Space, to keep the jobs here in Liberty for the civilian populace. If this wasn't a Xeno, it was probably a pirate who had another agenda. More info please.....

The reason to that kind of pirating is simple. You were probably trading that stuff to a lawful base or something. The pirate doesnt want that, since the houses are against him. And you're aiding the houses by trading, the pirate has every right to order you to drop your cargo, and in some cases, in the pirate has a transport friend, his friend will pick the stuff up and drop it off at his own base, yep.

No need to discuss this further...

There's plenty of RP reasons for that. The GC do that to hurt the economy, as well as many other pirates for different houses. On my corsair I never make them drop all of their cargo, but maybe a little bit of something if I want to take it home.:)

Another fun thing is Bats and Bots, let's you stay out there longer. I think it'd be advised to get a little more creative than credits, but meh, that's just me.

Change routes I guess. Those who slaughter the sheep instead of shaving it will go poor eventually.

Just be glad you werent smuggling... those idiot lawfuls not only take your entire load of cargo, they also fine you 4 million credits on top of it. They're worse than the real pirates.
