*Come out, come out Majkp where ever you are.*

The amount of drivel and nonsense we tend to spout here over the years I've been wondering how much space this whole forum takes. And what is the growth-rate?

On the more conversational level and as a basis for discussion, is it really necessary to keep the old posts alive? Just keep the pinned ones and lets say 2 years is enough of history me thinks.

Consequently I'm curious about what is the very first post here in the forums?

This is the oldest I found: #5.

EDIT:

Copied the rules here from page 2 to make it clear what I'm talking about. No central money collecting. The losers will just have to keep their word.

Rules:
* 1 million bet
* only one bet per person
* name of the char where the money will be deposited by all who have taken part if you happen to win
* Discovery forum size in bytes
* When the answer to question is clear (at that very given moment) everyone pays to the winner.

ps. The size of file/files on disk can be seen right click on them and properties. For example of one folder I have here: 405 KB (415 481 bytes)

Clear?

I'll start and make the template (bolded, text size = 4) you can follow so we can see clearly who's making a bet and who's just fooling around. I'll make a random around 500 MB guess here. Anyone not following the format of giving is disqualified. It can't really get simpler than this.

Size: 512 853 234 bytes
Cash to: Deep.Pockets

Flying under radar.

Including the pictures?

Honestly, it really depends on formatting...I'd imagine rather large, if the format is maintained, as in, the HTML is just the same, the pictures remain, etc. An offline version of Disco forums...would include an aweful lot of rather large images, for one.
We could go a step farther, and create a version where all the content is available offline, with all the linked-to video. Rather larger again.

I'd say no more than a gigabyte, even with the pictures, that is pushing it.

But then again some of the old 2 year and over posts are like our history. We must keep our history in order to move on and learn. Maybe an archive for some of the best pieces of history?

You can download whole websites to your computer. There are free programs for it. But it's not recommendable really since you need to keep it updated.

*still waves the good smelling delicacy to lure majkp out to answer the question*

It can't be all that large. Remember: the stuff actually hosted by the Disco Provider is only text, except in unusual circumstances. The rest of it, all the pictures, sigs, videos, EVERYTHING else, is stored elsewhere.

Half a meg can hold about 50k words. Considering that 50k words is about 200 pages of pure text, I'd say that the entire forum, all the text and everything, should easily fit in 1 gig. The database is likely much larger, but remember, in the end, it's all text. Text is lightweight.

A very, very generous estimate I'd give is under 10 gigs. The text itself probably easily fits in just one, however.

Most pictures would be hosted off-site though, so would they even count towards the total size?
