Here is my idea: Lets say a wall of fire hits the engines of a battleship. The engines would blow up and either destroy the ship in the process or cripple it (in the sense that it can't move). This could be done other places too. For example enough fire into the bridge kills all of the officers and the ship fires more slowly and turns slower as a result. You could do this with other spots on ships and on any ships but it would be a big under taking to make it work. Like I've heard that people are mad that you can't shot off the torpedo launcher in ships that have tubes so what if you hit the tubes enough the torpedoes stop firing. I think that this would be an interesting idea and could make epic stories in RP (think the fairy swordfish that crippled the torpedo with that one lucky torpedo to the rudder). Since people in their fiction about there characters have said stuff like 'a torpedo from a Rouge bomber hit my liberty gunboat in the fire control center which killed one of my gunners and i limped back to base with a big hole in my haul" because right now I think that it is unreasonable that this massive battleship can have practically no health left and is still more or less in the same fighting shape as it was before. This could really add to the meaning of "limping back to base" so what do you guys think. It may be impossible but I think that it would add a lot to the gaming experience. If it does work the next step would be to make individual pieces of ships to break off besides some of the winged fighter craft that already do.

Agreed. I doubt this is possible.

I will explore it with you though. To kill someone's engines completely, you would have to make their engine system much like a thruster. I don't think this can be accomplished though. But I do get your point, maybe sub-target someone's engines effectively killing a ships use in combat.

Really this would be kind of cool but you know everyone would grab the weapons that leave blast radius damage and shield killers just to kill someone's engine so it would be ran into the ground almost immediately. Killing someone's thruster is enough really.

Creating a component mesh that holds the HpEngine hardpoint is really all thats needed, then when that is destroyed, it simply is without an engine.

Though this may cause some complications.

In Vanilla, ships were composed of several different components and the destruction of one could result in either nothing, losing all weapons attached to the hardpoint, or simply blowing up.

Maybe something similar?

Well, I think there is a reason disco ships don't have components... Much more work. However, if they were implemented they would need to be balanced. I think it would be a good idea though.

Come on! Be free!

If so, then make a tug capable ships. I don't think it's very funny to be left drifting in space for hours, without the ability to even suicide...

Destructable components is possible, most vanilla fighters have wings and stuff that you can blow off. To my knowledge, none of the new ships in disco have destructable components, though.

It would be interesting to see, i also remember hearing someone say something about "weakspots" on ships.

Weakspots are where those multi-component ships have all those components near or touching one another. In vanilla, hitting a Titan where all four wings meet with a Lancer makes it go poof.
