Yes, I know, I have two massive projects in various stages of completion and other one-offs in progress...
But after having a conversation with several people on skype about how freelancers and mercs have very few good looking non-vanilla new ships to fly... I snapped.
I just had to do it... so I started in on public enemy #1 of 2, the KS ship line.
I based the design off a combination of the very basic underlying design philosophy of the actual homeworld ship, with a couple tons of Freelancer style dropped on it and augmented by a 'tough mining ship' mentality given by the infocard(s)
This is draft #1. This is the only view for now because the engines are not even done and the bottom is so mis-texture mapped its not even presentable.
Keep in mind; very rough draft here. I just want to know if you guys like this direction (spartan, utilitarian, like a darker civliian+KSified version of the Utility ships style)
The spalsh of 'danger yellow' is for color, but if you want it removed or changed to another color thats easily done.
Ok hit me, impressions suggestions and yes even at this early early stage criticisms.
This is the roughest draft I have ever let people see, so do remember its nowhere near finished.
Normally I'd be at this for 7 more hours before I showed it to you.... But I'm not wasting 7 more hours on this plus alot more for the other ships if you guys dont like this direction.
Instead Ill spend it finding a new direction.
I propose an informal vote... keep the line name Kiith Somtaww?
(a homeworld import just like the original models)
Or find a new line name?
I personally find the geology inspired names for each ship to be most enjoyable but 'Kiith somtaww' just doesn't seem Freelancerish.
It sure is a surveyor ship, but a combat ready tough-as-raw-hide surveyor. Just like all the 'KS' ships are supposed to be. Ideally the only thing that would have to be done to the info-cards is include a blurb about who or what corporation (that we haven't named yet) actually makes these guys.
I did a couple subtle things to break up the 'Gallic civilian' and 'racing' impression (which I can see in the first draft now that you mention it)

Is it me, or is it just bigger? I can't help it... this shape will hardly lose the 'racer' aspect, namely the cockpit at this position and the front section with that shape. But it is just my impression.
The modifications make it very very slightly larger, but not by an appreciable amount.
As for the cockpit, I more or less decided thats where it will be for this particular model, but if alot of people feel the same I can be convinced to change it.
To me a racing ship would actually have a forward flung cockpit.... But thats just me.
Having a cockpit at the way back always inspired images of a miniature barge of service or utility vehicle to me.
*shrugs*
And yeah Id agree, buffing the Basalt a touch would not hurt at all....
Looks great. I'm very happy that people like you are remaking the Homeworld ships. If it is to much work make new models, is it possible to retexture other homeworld ships to look more Freelancer like?
