UPDATE1 Phantom ship line

The models themselves look quite nice...but seriously, black is not necessarily scary (and here, it's just plain ugly). I'm no Phantom, but in terms of style, I always imagined them flying ships looking like the Virage, and I think a design like that would fit them best.

the Borderworld design shines through. - no matter if you make them pitchblack and add different wings to them - they look like an outcast went crazy on cardamine and had a go at pimping his scimitar.

they do not look scary, intimidating or in any way even dangerous. - they don t look "different" as like being of alien origin. - they just look like black painted bw ships.

something fundamental needs to be done to change them to something more exciting i believe. - - the quality of the model is OK though. - i cannot say much about the skin, cause it appears black to me. - black with a few engine grill skins.

They look better now than they did. But Jinx pretty much took the words right out of my mouth. The whole idea of them being based on Borderworld designs just doesn't fit.

As far as anyone using the Phantoms ships, several Phantoms use them yes. I'd say about a third to half of the Phantoms use the Phantom ship line.

1) There is currently no bomber, and since a lot of the Phantoms fly bombers that is a big reason you don't see them in Phantom ships.
2) There is also no gunboat, another ship that has to be taken from elsewhere.
3) The Shadow just moves really strange, ever flown it? Try flying it and you'll see what I mean. People either love it, or absolutely hate it.
4) The Penumbra is awesome, very nice. However most people just don't fly light fighters that often.

They aren't supposed to be black to be scary, they are black becuse the Phantom home system is pure darkness, and such ships would be very hard to spot in there, which would give them a great advantage.

Now that I agree with. I always liked the idea of black.

Ever watch Babylon 5? How the Shadow vessels are so hard to spot against the blackness of space, I love that whole idea.

babylon 5 shadow vessels are not really black. - they have a very nice organic skin - like the skin of an octupus with shades of purple.

and they are scary, cause these cruisers simply cut through any of the "minor" races ships.

You're right, they aren't black at all.. They have the look of black in space though.. Either way, yes - that skin would be awesome.

And I think I've already basically said this, but I agree with the Revenant as well. The ships are cool in a way, but not for the Phantoms.
