Zoners Consortium did a 57 participant event a number of months ago. We know a thing or two about arranging one of these suckers.
Your main issue is going to be lag and you will have to split the battles throughout 2 systems if you want any kind of cohesive dogfighting to take place.

Who cares about cohesive dogfighting? I want to see 10 GRN battleships, backed up with 20 GRN fighters, come after 5 Bretonian battleships and 10 Bretonian bombers... :P
Similar in concept, actually, to some of the old Order / BHG| battles that we used to do over in Omicron Lost. We'd get 20 - 30 ships total in one of those and the destruction would be epic. It's SO cool watching 3 or 4 Mortars hitting a ship right one after another... (Note my signature - most of the time it was MY ship being the recipient of those Mortars - it was still cool looking...)

finally a real 'warish' feeling to a sector. Good stuff.

We as admins were asked about doing this back in March by Igiss and the dev team. We feel that this is a good idea - doing something along the lines of the battles in Leeds that were set up a while back, where people could just do a /restart and get a fully equipped ship that was pre-set up for the combat.
One issue is that we would need participation and cooperation from our players. We're talking about a MASSIVE fleet battle here - 60 to 70 people participating, multiple camera ships flying around as well, and unfortunately even if the tide of the battle goes a certain way, it'll still have to have a pre-determined outcome. We don't have a problem with that from an administrative perspective - we just have to make sure that the server is actually up to it.
Well, what about Cannon's idea of splitting the server between two computers and put that on a large scale, saying Bretonian fighters get one computer when they enter the battle system, Gallic fighters get another when they enter the system, camera ships get another when they enter the system, 0.5 Bret caps get another, 0.5 Bret caps get another when they enter the system, Gallic caps (because they will have more) split between four comuputers. That is 9 computers, surely you can rustle up that many. Well make that 10 becuase the rest of the server is going to need 1 computer. And if you want to do a REAL battle make it like say, a week long or two weeks. When you think of a "battle" you must take into account the defender's ferocity in defending the system. Brets, if they have inherited any of their forefathers' genes, are tough, but not always the best until Liberty (or in old times the good old U.S. of A.!!!) backs them up

We're going to have lolwut swarms get gallic ships. Theyre going to go wherever tehy can (and places tehy ought not, too) and use those unbalanced guns and pew everything they can (or see, depending on how bad a lolwut they are).
*grins and runs off to make a gallic VHF with unbalanced pewsticks*
