The Johnpeter guide to getting a number everyone understands.
1. Get Freelancer Companion, and use default settings.
2. Find a circular route, that is one that can be repeated without being empty. IE, Buy sugar at New York, sell on Pittsburgh, buy bronze, sell on Palermo, buy chocolate, sell on New York.
3. Find the profit per second for 1 unit of cargo in Freelancer Companion.
4. Add all the profits per second up, and divide by the number of routes.
5. Get your number, and post it here along with how to do the route, if it is smuggling, blockade running, or legal, and the pirates.
Example:
Buy Cardimine on Planet Malta, Omicron Alpha.
Sell Cardimine on Planet Manhatten, New York.
Buy Robotic Components on Planet Manhatten, New york.
Sell Robotic Components on LPI sugarland, Texas.
Buy Slaves on LPI sugarland, Texas.
Sell Slaves on Planet Malta, Omicron Alpha.
Profit Per Second: 201
Legality: Smuggling
Pirates: Few

I believe you are using default settings for FL Companion? Because the profit per second depends on trade lane/jump gate/dock time.

Yes, profitability must be considered for individual legs, but to get an accurate representation of the profitability of a combination of legs, or a route, it's necessary to consider the length of time of each leg of the route.
Let's use a rough example to illustrate my point.
X->--Robotic Components-->-Y 190 c/s for 4 minutes
Y-->---------Silver-------->----Z 170 c/s for 14 minutes
Z-->--Blood Diamonds--->----X 180 c/s for 10 minutes.
Your "profit per second" would evaluate to 180 c/s, when in actuality, the route will be lower because you are only earning 190c/s for 4 minutes, and you're earning 170c/s for 14 minutes.
You must convert the total transit time to seconds for each leg of the route and find the sum of these values to get the total time of the route. Then divide the total profit of the entire route by the total time. Doing that will give you an accurate representation of the profitability of your trade route.
