I have had a positive experience too... with a pirate who did pirating for RP. That is something I respect. However, I have 15 experiences with pirates who start shootig down my shields and ask for amounts of money that make trading/mining just ridicilous. As a new player I am actually interested in earning some money, because a)... hey, I am a trader/miner to earn money and b) because I want to finance other chars with this money who will have different roles and equipment.

And no offense, but this is a GAME - no one can tell me that he thinks shooting a miner who has worked an hour for his cargo is going to be FUN for this miner. RP or not, a little bit of friendlyness (even for pirates) would suit many players well.

I'm proud to not fly a single pirate character.

There's more money (and fun, if you ask me) in RP trade convoys or ambassador missions or what have you in omicron minor (heh). Granted, especially with the USI, pirates are a big part of the experience, and sometimes it's even more enjoyable because of a good -long- pirating session.

But I will never support the guys who pirate to make money. Sure you should come out ahead of the game, but never to profit and make bank.

There's a good "tips for traders - how to be pirated thread" that is a good point of view from a pirate.

It's good for miners, too. I think it lacks a few pre-pirate mentality points for traders... I will write them out and see what everyone thinks.

Well I cannot speak for other pirates, but for me, it's a combination of Role Play AND money. If I have a good encounter with someone, usually the money issue is not a big deal. I tend to be more polite because I do better that way. But I think that to regulate pirates would be like saying that they are all a part of the governments that hunt and kill them. Most pirates should have a sense if what is reasonable, to them of course. Obviously it makes no sense to tell a person to dump their load if they cannot handle it all... that's just insane. However to take a portion of a load, or credits... sure. The idea is not to bankrupt a player, just make a lil profit off them. At least that is how I operate.

IMHO,

Mordrom

Saying there's no escorts is like saying Zelot isn't to blame.

Often, BHG|, MM~, [Merc], Bravo[x], and other Merc/Freelancer tagged people will offer escort. If you have 64 million credits of cargo, and you pay three escorts five million, that's 15 million to them and 39 million for you. Two fighters and a bomber will be able to take on two gunboats as you make your escape.

Against 2 or more pirates, you are screwed.
Not if that pirate happens to be in a bomber. That's just as bad as two VHFs. Possibly worse.

No Escorts =

Basically, you play as an escort you risk getting sanctioned. Pirates have free reign as per these rules.

I tried coming back after a long time off due to these changes and found you are exactly right. So all you who say hire escorts, don't forget to add "and be sanction bait."

[*USI*] tagged pilots with [R], [JC], [C], and [CSO] are typically available for escort missions, given the right circumstances.
(Or more easy to remember, the USI guys without the Large Trains, heh)

Escorting traders and engaging unlawfuls does not count as bounty hunting.
