I thought I would post the following to explain why the mining profits are reasonably high.

They are high so that miners can afford to pay escorts or pirates a reasonable amount of money.

Do not complain if you are pirated, hire escorts. Two bombers can destroy multiple transports pretty easily.

If you cannot find escorts then consider what you are paying them. If you pay an escort 2 million per hour and you make 30-40 million per hour then this will be the problem. Pay your escorts 10-20 mil per hour or more.

For example, if you have a group of 6 mining ships, mining for 4 hours you can easily afford to pay 2-3 escorts 50-100 million each for this period.

The current mining profit levels are an experiment to see if we can encourage the existance of pirates and escorts and increase interaction between these groups and miners. If the experiment fails then we'll probably reduce the profits available from mining.

EDIT: A note on pirates selling ore: Most pirates can't land on the bases where the ore is bought. Pirates will need to sell the ore through a third party. For many pirates selling the ore to zoners or junkers will be necessary to convert the ore into cold hard cash. Your profits might be halved as a result of this but this is intentional.

Why should those that would play as you intended (hiring escorts) be punished because majority lacks wit for example?

I think one of the biggest things I have seen happen is Miner IDs transports pirating other Miner ID'd transports in huge groups. There has been this large movement of players in liberty who stalk the miners and then take their cargo as they start transporting it home. They aren't actual pirates, more just like mining bullies. Police and Navy authorities are slow to do anything usually cause they can never tell who is the real bad guys cause they just look like miners (and sometimes lie in game about what they've been doing). But yeah this is all remedied by hiring escort bombers.

I am surprised I haven't seen any new mining factions grow a lot, or existing corps start creating mining divisions. Those would definitely be willing to hire escorts or have members whose sole duty is protection

Ick, mining is gross. I dont know what'd ever compel someone to do it to an operation that requires shooting rocks over and over and over... Sure it encourages teamplay, but so does trading, doesnt it?

Shouldnt it? What would make trading more attractive for teamplay? Instead of making ways to get money equal, you've made it inequal... What I mean is...

Mining - High Profits, Equal Boringness to Trading, Teamplay almost required.

Trading - Medium/Low Profits, VERY boring, getting to interact with pirates (finding new ways out of situations) teamplay not required.

So you would rather grind as a lone powertrader than mine (which can be good fun) as part of a group?

Btw, mining mod = awsumsauce.

This... and it's becoming quite annoying. It really makes one wonder why the LPI/other liberty authority doesnt have penn locked down, since it's become (or maybe always has been) such a pirate hotspot, especially near tremont. Guess they have their hands full with all the whackos running around in NY attacking people for no reason OORP.

My LSF has his hands full, taking out rampaging pirates and... Miners who apparently can now take other miner's goods.

I for one won't be hiring escorts, I got pirated by a whole group of people and they would have destroyed me before the escorts could have killed one... so basically escorts are useless to me. Plus I don't really like sharing profits (sometimes I will).

And so you'll probably just keep getting hit over and over again.

Have you ever thought that maybe the people that pirated you don't want to die either? And if they see bombers they'll find another target, therefore you'll make most of the profit instead of none of the profit?

Useless? I don't think so.
