^_^

It had to happen, sooner or later.

Didn't Mary Shelley also base her novel Frankenstein in Romania?

Well just for the benefit of the ignoramuses in our midst.... Vlad Tepes (aka. Vlad the Impaler, Dracula, etc.) was not a nice fellow, to be sure. However, he did manage to save Europe's ass from invasion by the Muslims. Of course this little factoid is conspicuously missing from certain well-known and very fictional works of literature.

Wasn't that Charles Martel, at the battle of Tours?

Harley, Harley, Harley,

At the risk of nipping that minnow you're dangling.... yes and no. Charles Martel ("the Hammer") indeed fought off a Muslim invasion, which comprised Moors from the south. Vlad's time was some 700 years later, this time fighting off the Ottomans from the east.

Here endeth the history lesson....

Hmm, Dracula - class light fighter? interesting idea.

Oh and Charles Martel was not a Slav. He was Franconian.

Jan III Sobieski also added his 2 cents into hoding the Ottoiman Turks off.

Vienna, 1683. (Yes, the turban heads got THAT far)

After a whole-day battle, we won. Wikipedia says it was one of the biggest battles in history. Just imagine 20 000 of those winged Hussars charging into you in full gallop (OUCH!!!)

Also imagine, how might history look like, if Vienna became a Turkish city.

Maybe there sould be something named after Tzar Kaloyan - A medieval Bulagarian ruler who defeated the Crusaders lead by Baldwin of Flandria (who sought that our lands are quite rich and are a good looting/pillaging target) Unfortunately for him his Knights-in-shiny aromor were beaten like dogs from the bulgarian army - consisted of a lighter cavalary , heavy infantry , light infantry armed with hooks (guess how a knight felt when found himself on the ground from a "friendly" backrub from these hooks - usually the knight ended up with a brocken spine from the fall - next time prob he won't wear 70+ kg of iron on his back;)) A lil note - this is one of the biggest medieval combats (not popular due to the cold war info-darkening between eastern and western Europe)

Cheers!

For more interested people here is Bulgaria in short: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgaria#History

This one is especially for Tzar Kaloyan:
http://www.bulgaria.com/history/rulers/kaloyan.html

P.S. And for the lazy ones who don't want to click away - here is a short thing bout this:

The need for diplomatic relations drove him to make an agreement with the Roman Pope, whereby the knights of the Fourth Crusade were given free passage through Bulgarian territory. But instead of continuing towards the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, the crusaders laid siege to and captured Constantinople. The Latin Empire was established in 1204 AD, and Count Baldwin of Flanders was set up as emperor. Early on, the units of crusaders began to infringe upon Bulgarian territory. Upon hearing of a possible invasion by the crusaders in the early spring of 1207 AD, Kaloyan decided to meet their force at the edge of the Bulgarian territory. The decisive battle was fought at Adrianople (present day Edirne in Turkey). This was the first time that the heavily armored western knights were beaten by the light cavalry of the Bulgarians. Emperor Baldwin was taken hostage and a number of eminent knights were captured. As was the custom of the period, the knights were freed in exchange for ransom, but the emperor was left in Veliko Turnovo as collateral for the peace. Although he was treated with the utmost respect at the Bulgarian court, Baldwin immediately began to look for people who were willing to overthrow the Bulgarian ruler and to set a favorable peace with the Latin Empire in exchange for money and promises of power. The plot was unmasked and the people involved were beheaded. But, although Baldwin himself was dead, his goal was eventually achieved Kaloyan was killed several months later at the Siege of Solun.

P.S. Guess by yourselves why I have bolded Veliko Turnovo;)
