Me and Montezuma humilitaed a pirate GB a while back. Montezuma was in a lF, mind. so yes, scouting and annoy the pirate is the name of the game.

sitting next to the trade ship won't do any good. even if you have 3 GBs as escorts.

Point of the escort is to stop a fighter even getting close to you. Keep it in mind

Get a Shire. I tried one in OpenSP, and actually went to the nearest Battleship seller to get it licensed. It can take down Bungoats faster than I can take down a mince pie.

You can surely die trying when a smart gunboat comes to you.
Cooperation is a key of a game

don't get your hopes up. a proper gb or bomber can eat a shire hands down.

I used to have an independent mercenary ... but unfortunately that mercenary has since been deleted because there existed at the time a ban on all mercenaries in at least 2 of the house systems (Liberty and Rheinland). My mercenary was designed specifically for escorting traders. So ... that coupled with traders who don't wanna hire escorts is why you don't see many around. The only escorts I've ever seen here in Disco have been those in the same player faction as the trader (IND comes to mind).

I'll have to admit, when they run it is fun. Quite fun, in fact. I remember not too long ago when some guy in a transport had a hefty 20m bounty on his head so I tried to take him on in my Sabre. I had to ring up two buddies just so we could corner him, and even then we chased him around Bretonia/Liberty for half a bloody hour.

Good fun indeed.

It's a pitty that I don't see smart pirates/escorts around anymore. Now it's more of a "Meh, escorts are unbalanced, might as well not bother and let the guy pirate me" or when the tide changes "Meh, bombers are so unbalanced I can't even pirate a measly Albatross. Might as well not bother and go trade instead.". Now, either things are so bloody unbalanced that the not bothering is actually justified or people are getting lazier by the day. I think I'll choose the second one.

Basically:

Traders: Learn to run, plan ahead, get some decent scouts/escorts, pay them well.
Escorts: Learn to escort. Scout ahead. Scout behind. Scout under your knickers. Anything that takes to get the job done.
Pirates: Get some buddies. Plan ahead. Cover all possible escape routes.

Pirates vs. escorts?

Easy.

Have the escort(s) always be one TL ahead, if it's clear, an escort tells the transport to go through, if not, ... Well, isn't that obvious?

Most pirates out there simply state there demand and immediately start shooting at the trader. idiotic. but yes, using your escort as a scout is the way to go.

Ill make sure your ship dies faster than the escorts kill me.

It's not hard to do, see the "VHFs cant Kill Bombers fast enough" thread

I'd like to test that with 5 dual-missile escorts. I wonder if they could strip your snac before you could fire a second time :)
