has anyone else noticed that the ingame population is always about 70 -90 % independent characters?
I was thinking about this the other day as I was trading and it came across at rather odd. What is it about Factions that make people want to spend most of the time playing independently? I would have thought with the amount of RP that revolves around factions, and the fact that a person is in no way bound to the first faction they choose, that the population would be more like 70% faction.
Is it just the case that most people like to RP faction stuff on forums but when it comes to actual game play they arnt that interested?
when I scan though chat I always see a huge bunch of people with no tags, much more than with. (right now there are about 24 faction players out of about 100 player on server
That's true, specially in times with low server population (Afternoons in GMT+1, a clear example, 80-120 people). You can't almost find a single faction character, but an angel sometimes, and such.
There are a number of factions with no tag, you know.
It is an interesting observation you've got, though.

Or lots of people with weird or non-related tags like RUS or CRO
It seems most people dont know or dont bother checking the forums; and even if they do most people dont bother joining a faction to fund their other chars; for example why would you spend time joining a mining faction with rules, RP, and what not; if you just want to powermine to get that beautiful Geb everyone in the hood is talking about?

Well at least we do something against them in Omegas. Not too nice shooting out miners but my experience if you shoot down them, some of them look after the things.
The reason why this is because it's a lot more fun to just get onto an indy character and not have to worry about people ordering and stuff like that. They don't have to fill out reports and stuff like that. The reason why there are so many freelancer ID'd players and stuff like that is because they can trade whatever they want. They don't have to worry about diplomacy and only doing a few routes. It's a lot simpler to play an indy. That's what the big attraction is.

what are your thoughts?
Aloha!
Your observations are correct, a large amount of the Discovery community are playing as a independent character. This I've also noticed a long time ago, and have also found out why it's the way it is right now. But no it's not because they like forum RP more then the actual in-game perspective.
Theres different kind of people that play here, which you all know of course.
Some people choose to become a independent because they just cannot stand restrictions, this is the main group on independents. They cannot stand somebody thats higher ranked then them and that they actually have to keep themselves to the RP restrictions and the player faction restrictions. Some want to be flying a bigger ship (capital) but being in a faction takes to much time to acquire it. However what they usually don't realize is that being in a player faction usually grants you more role play opportunities with people outside as well as people inside your player faction. Also being in a player faction usually gives you more of a feeling you actually take part of the organization.
Of course this is from my point of view, agree or disagree whatever you want.
But of course not all independents are like that, some might be trying to go for a special RP, theres 'independents' flying around trying to become a Phantom, Nomad or maybe a Wilde for a change.
This however is only a small group of independents.
You've also got people who like to make a name for themselves, get a reputation on this server. If your in a faction this progress will take way more time, because people will look at your tag, not at your name. It's a simple ego thing, nothing wrong with it as their usually good RP'ers.
Thing is, it's their choice and if they decide to be a independent for whatever reason they've got then so be it. It's Discovery's freedom, in RP their considered just as much part of the faction their in as the player faction.
If you enjoy having a carreer inside a player faction, then join one of them, and if you hate restrictions or whatever just go for independent.
