Im having some problems with Freelancer recently, and Im posting here hoping someone known some way to resolve it.
I tried to play vanilla, deactivating the discovery mod with FLMM. But when I pressed new game, I had a CTD. Then I tried to set a server, and it dont connected with it, also having a CTD afterwards. Tried that more times but not working.
Then I uninstalled Freelancer, and installed it again. Did that a lot of times, and even downloaded the Immersion version on Torrentspy, mounting it in a virtual drive to made it work. Im also uninstalled Freelancer Explorer, the Hard Point editor, FLMM and the account manager. I installed another version of FLMM but dont worked. I also deleted the installer values in the registry after uninstalled, and used CCleaner to delete some errors in the registry. Also did virus scan, but nothing was found.
With all that, the damn vanilla game is not working. Discovery, frontierspace and WTS are working, but not vanilla. If someone known something, please let me known.
After uninstalling FL, did you delete all the stuff the installer leaves behind?
On the my games folder, FL leaves some data. Same on the flshoots folder on "/my docs/my images" folder. And sometimes it leaves stuff on the program files folder too.
If you already did all that, then i do not know what the problem is.

Maybe your install disc is defective. That's why mods fix it, because they modify the files that the disc installs.

Or it could posabaly be that discovery has imprented some of its data in to your fl file and u cant do any thing about it unless u deleat it all. Lol it happend to me. I tryed to play vanila and had to deleat every thing lol..

Saved games and stuff were already deleted before my first message in this topic.
I uninstalled the game yesterday and dont played.
I let the computer without it for one day.
Now I reinstalled it, and when was to play for the first time appeared the message "Freelancer doesnt recognize your video card, blablabla", and then asking if I wanted to continue. I pressed yes and its now working, both single and multiplayer games. Only the server do not work.
As you can see, Freelancer is like windows: a random program. Each time you install its one different behaviour. I already thought before that windows itself has a randomizer inside its most closed areas, where there are options like "crashes in one month" or "crashes in one year". Weird.
