Perhaps "neural net" refers to its structure, rather than its operation? Maybe it's organised like the neural networks in our brains without actually being connected to them.

Yep...That's why I mentioned earlier that it's debatable as to whether it's biological or artificial at its root. I'm just sayin' that my looking at it as having a biological root is perfectly plausible because A: almost 1000 years in the future, in a world that has nanotech to repair a craft's hull surface, it would not be a large stretch of the imagination to also assume that they would have the technology to implant a nano wireless transmitter somewhere in the Mellon that would act as not only a personal communications device, but as a navigational aid when flying in space. & B: It's not like I suggested at any point that being chipped gives any sort of advantage to the Sirius populace beyond simple convenience.

It's not like someone chipped in the head can, for example, download a program & instantly learn kung fu on the fly & go forth & kick ass, any more than a person today can download a kung fu DVD torrent & go forth & kick ass.

That would just be silly

For people that walk around w/ bluetooth earpieces & net connected cell phones, what's the big difference for Sirians really, besides the P.O.V. that the tech is implanted in the head?

Okay, this is my two cents worth as a player - and as someone who role plays as an AI character or two.

We currently have bluetooth technology with people able to walk around with the phones on their hip and the little thing in their ears, and of course with all the interesting apps that Apple has for the I-phone - like checking your bank accounts, sending e-mail, watching TV.

So I see the Neural Net as simply a set of mastoid implants that avoid the use of something external like the headset and phone on the belt. We're already effectively able to do that now. You're not plugged in like in the Matrix, you're simply talking and with the use of special contact lenses, I'm sure you'd be able to view video as well.

For ship to ship communications, the game uses the standard Hollywood trick, where light (and radio transmissions) move at the speed of the plot. In game play, we probably and effectively do the same, still using standard RF signals, only digital signals. The nice thing with a digital signal is that it doesn't matter what the source is - whether it's a microphone that converts and send that signal out, or a computer that ends up generating the signal in the first place.

So for AI ships, when communicating between human bio-units and the unit processor of the ship, standard RF communication is used. When sending data between ships to the full AI central core, they still use RF moving at the speed of plot, but it's a compressed signal that doesn't need the extra words of English - you're transferring files just as we do now when we upload and download. And as for dealing with Nomad bio-units - the current established RP is that Nomad characters and full AI characters CANNOT interact. The Nomads communicate via thoughts - the AI's communicate strictly via RF and don't have minds for the Nomads to send thoughts into. Wilde and Isejin characters CAN interact with AI characters, since those are infested humans. However, if the AI character happens to have some Nomad npc's in his hold, then the Nomad character can detect the bodies and will probably attack them.

Quote:It doesn't matter if you think it's ridiculous or not Magoo, it simply doesn't matter, beacuse the way the N-N works has never been described in detail by either the game developers or the mod developers.

People can RP any way they see fit

Now, as to it being ridiculous? Not in the least...no more ridiculous than having a wireless router connecting a person to the net today.

Remember Magoo, we are dealing with a society that is more than 800 years more advanced than we are. & the reason I scoff at every rebuttal you've made, is because it seems you are looking at it from a present day viewpoint.
I wasn't aware that debate on a completely speculative piece of the game and the pointing out of flaws in ones idea wasn't welcome on the forums. I'll keep to myself from now on. While we're on the topic then, I recommend the forbidding of any new factions not clearly written in stone, all feedback threads of non-vanilla groups to be deleted and the members banned.

Since clearly discussion on topics without answer is frowned upon.

I now then, bid this thread adieu now that my ego has formulated a retort.

Let's not go forgetting that different factions will have differing levels of technology.

All my ships, for example, use radio transmission. No video, no teleporter or anything sci-fi. My Marauder isn't even pressurised, requiring me to be in a spacesuit with an oxygen tank stuffed in the cockpit.

I can talk to other people and accept transmissions across whet ever bands my equipment can pick up. White, blue, green and pink.

As for neural net, I think of it like an online banking system. "Neural Net" Is just the catchphrase used to describe the system. It holds my credits and I can backup information there. It's an alliance of various civilian banks and information agencies to cater to the needs of the space travelling public, for a profit of course.

Truth be told I've never really considered the Mission Commission to be a giant neutral organisation, rather being the comms tower of whatever station I've taken the job from.

Video transmissions could be so easily abused.

Does no one else think that there would be a million penis' on view in Manhattan alone?

The way I RP Neural Net is just like the Internet, really, with most places and ships having a Neural Net terminal of some sort. Also, PDA things for carrying arround.

I agree w/ Jamie about that.
I even attempted to illustrate that very thing w/ my old sig that I used for months on end:

(take note of the Neural-Net relay station)
