[color=#333333]Today was a sad day for us all.
This is a report regarding yesterday's joint rescue for the (]c[)Volantis operation between the Order, Corsair Benitez and various Zoners. Unfortunately, the operation was failure, the result was the destruction of the Volantis and retreat of the rescue fleet.
As you all know, the objective of the operation was to rescue the Volantis, along with any personnel and valuable assets onboard. The AngelWing also participated in the operation, before her destruction.
Fleet Assembly
The ZTC fleet has arrived in Omicron 100 for a rendevous with the rest of the rescue fleet, including Corsair Benitez and Order Primary fleet members. We I have arrived with the AngelWing, I couldn't belive my eyes. This was the single largest assembly of spacecraft I've ever witnessed, it must have been around 30 vessels in total. The Leonardo was fully operation to serve as a mobile command centre for the operation.
After a brief introduction between the factions, four squads were formed - The Leonardo Squad, The Order Squad, The Zoner Squad and The Corsair Squad. Each squad containing members of their respective factions for ease of organisation and communication. The AngelWing was with the Leonardo. The fleet travelled from Omicron 100 to Omicron 58, taking the following route. Interestingly, we've picked up a member of SCRA in Omicron Theta, who agreed to contribute to our effort. A tempoarary alliance was formed since the Order have certain relations with the SCRA.
The aliens were first spotted near the Jumphole to Omicron 58 in Omicron 55, there were a total of 8 of them, including Wilde and Nomads. They quickly jumped to Omicron 58 as our fleet approached. We pursued and jumped. What we didn't know was that it was a trap! The cunning aliens have set up an ambush for us, with the help of their automated weapons platforms. The fleet was taken by surprise and struggled to scramble against all the hostile contacts. We split up into two main battle groups, one engaging the alien fighters immediately while the other, including Leonardo searched for the Volantis.
As soon as The AngelWing jumped right into the cross fire between the fleet and aliens, I tried to pull her as far away from the action as possible. With energy bursts and explosions all over the place, the crew struggled to coordinate and navigate The AngelWing as we tried to stay close to the Leonardo. I underestimated the power of alien weapons platforms, they took a good chunk of our shields. We returned fire and disabled some of the platforms.
Unfortunately, our weapons signature were picked up by several of the alien ships and they discovered The AngelWing pretty fast. Over four alien fighters concentrated fire on us, we fought valiantly and with courage. Julian pushed the engines and weapons systems beyond their limits, Chris pulled the best evasive maneuvres he knew, Hailey strived to target the aliens' vital systems and Cabulb Jr. shut itself down to provide extra power to the ship's systems.
Although The AngelWing and her crew fought remarkably bravely, we were simply no match for the inhuman strength of the aliens, now combined and determined to see to our destruction. Finally, The AngelWing's shields are brought down as she was overwhelmed and the aliens' superior weapons mercilessly chewed away our hull plating as if the armour upgrade we had didn't exist. I watched, in my escape pod, as the ship I've called my home for years exploded in a fiery brilliance of light.
Most of the crew have survived, luckily, along with the main data core of Cabulb Jr. However, lots of the experimental data we've collected and discovered over the years were lost. Some crewmen also sacrificed themselves to provide cover for the escape pods.
The rescue fleet were in retreat the last I heard from them, although we had the aliens outnumbered 3:1, they still gained the upper hand with their superior weaponry and combat skills. The Volantis was discovered and destroyed before the Leonardo squad could get to it. Whether or not the assets onboard the Volantis were saved, I don't know. The ZTC and Order have suffered heavy casualties, one of which included Louisa - a good friend of mine. Finally, the fleet were driven back from Omicron 58 and the survivors regrouped at Omicron Theta. They disbanded and withdrawn after a short debrief.
The outcome of the mission was a failure, the Volantis was lost. Our rescue fleet was defeated.
The crew of The AngelWing, what is left of it anyway, has safely arrived at Lividia Shipyard in Omicron 74 for medical treatment. I was lucky that I only had some minor burns, some others have suffered broken bones, severe plasma burns and some didn't make it.
I was informed by Interspace Commerce that The AngelWing would soon be replaced by a refurbished Corvo cruiser of the same model with the exact same loadouts. But we all knew that it'll never be the same as the old AngelWing...
Louisa, you've been a great mentor and friend. You'll be sorely missed by us. Rest in peace, girl.
To all the brave men and women who gave their lives during the operation, you've all fought with distinguished honour and courage. You'll be remembered for your sacrifices, may you find peace in the next world.
