Would be up for the escort "boost" ... Nowdays, escorts are uselles sometimes, because the trader get's killed anyway... and no reason to care about how the fight continues after that. If the escort had to be destroyed first, that would be different story tho. Also more "lawfull" work for mercs and freelancers.

The basis of this idea is decent, but it could do with some refining.
I think official trading factions should receive discounts when buying cargo they're supposed to transport in RP, which shouldn't be too hard to do. The escorts suggestion is also very good but there're just too many possibilities to consider, balancing issues.
I would say traders that belong to factions could have bonus on their profits in the same way miners with all mining stuff have mining bonus.
Another thing is contraband made by independent traders and affiliates: currently they are rarely sanctioned by polices. Thus we have a lot of people who simply don't mind about trade rules (I've seen a lot of unauthorized people transporting plutonium or Ageira Tech stuff). I guess we could imagine the jumpgates are scanning cargo of all ships using it. Then jumpgate could send scanned data to local authorities that could fine smuggler. To represent that fact, I would suggest that everybody would be allowed to scan shippers and report smugglers in an oorp forum. Then appropriate sanction could be taken. The idea is to make smuggling more risky and to incite people to join trade factions in order to be allowed to transport profitable goods.
(Note that I've supposed members of trade faction does not smuggle)

You can make something like 1 ship in formation - no bonus
2 ships in formation - +10% to regen
3 ships - +20%

the problem is that it doesn't includes fighters escort in it, so for example, you can take 3 Liners to fly in formation and to pwn everyone who will try to stop you
There might be some bonus with selling it. For example 3 transports of the one offical faction in system, under the one tag - so, + 15% profit (or 30%)
Also, Ivan idea should work well too.
I'll be glad to see if there would be a discounts for buying cardie on Malta for example or for getting slaves on Niverton. But first better to make it only to offical factions. So, it would raise their activity, 'cause dudes would join them to get more money.

Yet another point for my "boost trader defenses" proposal. People don't like the idea of a transport with gunboat offense and survivability, but this is often what they're up against.
And honestly, would a fat, knock-kneed ship the size of a cruiser, even with semi-gunboat shielding and point defense do well against two or three well-flown bombers, gunships or "q-boat" type transports?
Even a slender streamlined gunboat designed to kill bombers is mincemeat against them in numbers.
