Constructing new stations

So I've been thinking (I'm sober this time I swear!), we build new stations from time to time right? What processes and techniques do you think would be required to get a new one built in the first place?

Does the main structure get fabricated in a shipyard for ease of manufacturing? Does a Mobile Construction Centre (think MCV from RA series) get moved on site and shipments of supplies get to it to build various sections.

In my mind I can envisage many trains or heavy lifters having to ship sections of the superstructure to the location on site where specialist ships literally either weld, bolt or whatever technique is used in space. Maybe their magnetised and locked into place with actual links... Hmm, would make swapping sections easier.

So yeah, how do new stations get built? Though right now I'm thinking lawful/government/military sense, though the thought of how pirates and fringe factions get around to building them also makes me curious.

There's two general types of stations. Standard ones and asteroid bases.


For the standard ones, modular design. They're built in sections, with Deep Space Engineering being the most likely culprit, and then moved into position by ships probably very similar to the Heavy Lifter, if not them.

The asteroid bases, on the other hand, are simply carved out of the rock and then sealed up.

Explain Foyle Shipyard in Londonderry under Molly control, and Vieques Shipyard in Puerto Rico under Junker control, I can't see DSE in there. Though Junkers have good engineering skills.

Well, DSE couldn't be the only one capable of building the station sections(though it sure would help explain the Liberty economy).
To make the most out of a modular construction method, the sections should be simple and easy to build. It's quite reasonable to assume that it'd be possible, albeit difficult, to build one without the aid of a shipyard. On a related note, intercepting and stealing station components on route to be installed wouldn't be that far out of the question.

The thought of stealing station sections actually strongly appeals to me, it would be great to see a joint venture between DSE and maybe BMM for a new mining base in Bretonia being raided by KSF and Molly forces for their own nefarious needs.

It's just we always ships supplies, but never actual segments of stations... Would make for interesting RP in my mind, though it would be meta'd as piracy, stations parts must be worth millions at least.

Two weeks isn't a gravedig, Fletcher. Two YEARS is a gravedig...

Ship hull panels are effectively station building supplies. Same basic materials, and the nice thing is that a station doesn't have to have engines, so you don't have to worry about those particular stresses when you're engineering the thing.

I think this is actualy realy simple!

You will find "Sigma-19 Gate Construction Site" and "Tau-31 Gate Construction Site" are the only "active" Construction Sites currently. I know "Daumann heavy construction" and "Deep space engeneering" are related with Station constructions and a comming "solar (something) faction" will be related to this biz in Gallia.

But this is all done hidden/on Planet/dunno where, with exeption of the 2 "Gate Construction Sites" that you can dock and sell stuff to.

These construction sites have in common an demand for:

*Robotic Components(with very high prizes payed for)
*Basic Alloy

Also there is a little adjected, i guess mobile, Constructionstation where probably some technicians and operators reside.

So best guess is that robots do most of the real work and Basic Alloy is the working material. I doubt in that regard there is much difference between Gates and Stations.

Just because DSE builds the module doesn't mean that they have to put them in space.

Anyone who has run a base kill mission or two knows that business is good in the module retail business.

Kharon, both of those are Gate construction sites, not station ones. You'll note that both sites are full stations as well. Why build a station if making a gate is just as easy? As Dusty mentioned, stations seem to be built much more frequently than jump gates, so it's likely that building them is far easier than making jumpgates, since the gates need the fancy Ageira-made parts.

That, or gate building sites have really lazy workers/robots.

Gate construction does take a little while, yes. Though as I understand it DSE simply plugs in the Ageira parts.

The Hokkaido project is creating a gate to the system where the Dragons base out of and is more a tool for Samura to study the gate than actually get anything done.

The Sigma project is relatively recent, as I understand it.

And then there is the slight issue of needing, as far as I know, the gate to be connected to a sister gate on the far side before you can flip a switch and set up whatever tube exists between the two. Which I presume means getting from point A to point B at least once the old fashioned way and building the second gate over there. Which might take a while, depending on how many light years away the connecting gate is going to be.
