' Wrote:... the problem here is that everyone thinks because this is an RP server that no combat can ever happen...
This is something else that is funny about this server.
I've seen Outcasts and Corsairs bitch at the other side because when they ran into each other it ended in PvP.
Your factions are at war. It is perfectly acceptable RP for a Corsair to spit an insult or two at an Outcast and then attack you. If you don't like that, find another faction. It applies to all factions and their enemies. It isn't bad RP just because they don't talk to you. Its the factions RP to be at war with one another. Meaning most encounters will end in bloodshed.
This is how our server looks like. Soo instead of Q_Q'ing about problems, or the things you want changed, get your ass ingame and do some RPing.
Another thing, the fact that hostile faction insult each other is normal. Swearing should be allowed too, it's a normal process of everyday life. The fact that a Outcast calls a Corsair 'idiot' doesn't mean that the Corsair goes:
ZOMG Q_Q INSULT BAN HIM HAHA

> roleplay is pretending to play a role in a specific enviroment/setting <
such a role cannot really be limited but by ones own imagination. ( which basicly means that you can play a two headed creature with godlike spaceflight abilities and a digestion problem. - rules define the enviroment - and the more rules you have, the more uniform are the roles you can play.
a good roleplay setting allows a good deal of freedom and enough restrictions to keep the enviroment believable. ( meaning, no half gods that descent from the skies in a semi-serious space sim [ like neon genesis evangelion or so ] .... also no furries, i guess )
the more rules you have the more a role becomes an archetype, - until you have indeed no other choice but to roleplay an archetype. - which is still roleplay, but it may not be the role you wish to play.
so - it is quite important not to think of roleplay and rules as contradictory - whats contradictory is freedom and rules.
that leaves the question :
is disco about a free choice of roles to be roleplayed? or is disco moving to an archetype system of roles to be roleplayed.

Going to compress what you said and remove the flaming bits about Q.Q:
Freelancer is a PvP game. We RP to give that PvP meaning.

Oh and the never ending saga here in the forums ... its never ending. We're all disgruntled because none of us are getting our way. There's no such thing as compromise ... and you'll never get anyone to see anything from someone else's viewpoint. I don't think this community has ever been cordial to one another. Probably because its so easy to flame people you never see face to face.
True about the 84 wait, but the community is different now, right?
I'd rather see whining and complaining about in-game problems than about out-of-game frustration at everyone.
Yea Rp is the fun of the game and the community, if you cant Role-play there is not much left in the game (and you will soon get bored and leave)
But keep in mind: Keep your smile, its a game for fun, to relax :)
If someone game's objective is to feel strong or express him or herself in good or bad way, It is a different story.
Sometime, ''RP'' Insult tend to looks like people been mean at other. It kind like feel like oorp insult disguised in Rp. But there a limit where there is more insult and threatening then overall Rp. Perhaps I am too sensitive, I always try to be nice with other players regardless of their faction.
Fair play = Real player's interaction = Respect
Rules dictate the structure of the role we play. Without the rules, there are no roles, only anarchy. Playing within those rules is part of the challenge of the role. If we look at a role, within the game, and say, "I like it except for this, that, and the other thing." then in reality we do not like the role. This is not to say that there is no latitude for personality quirks or differences. So long as we stay within the rules of the role, we may customise our characters to no end without causing damage to the system. For example, it isn't wrong for our house security character to sympathise with an outlaw groups beliefs. It would be wrong, however, for that character to allow the outlaw group to break house laws because of those sympathies.
Can we roleplay a corrupt security character? Sure I don't see why not, however, we should be prepared for our character to be kicked out of his/her faction as a result of that corruption. There is nothing that says a character cannot fufill multiple roles, going from one faction to another. Just remember, there are consequences and reactions to the actions our characters take. If our character adopts a belief or stand contrary to the rest of the groups, it will be ostricised, just like in real life. That is part of the other player character's roles.
The main things to consider when adopting non-standard aspects to our character's role is whether there is a group already existing for that roleplay and if it will impact the role of others negatively. If either of those questions can be answered with a yes, it's probably best we don't adopt that aspect. For example, if we wish to play a pacifistic character then that character should not be a part of a group that is actively at war with another group. By not supporting the battles our character is actively allowing others within the group to be harmed as well as undermining thier role within the game.
And finally, it's best to keep in mind that we are not the character. Just because a character does something bad to us, doesn't mean the player behind the character is doing something wrong. An insult or attack on our characters is not the same as an insult or attack on ourselves. The flip side of this is that our character is often going to be presented with situations where he/she would have to act contrary to the morals we hold in real life. It is important that we act out the characters beliefs and morals, not our own.

Oh SRSLY?! Ok, lets name three awesome roleplaying games.
Baldur's gate(SoA). - Can you not be spawn of ball? No, you can deny it but you still are.
Fallout 2 - can you play a little girl? Nope? Such tragedy.
Morrowind? Kotor? Blade Runner? WTF TO THE OMG? NO? NO OPEN SANDBOX GAME?! THEY ALL SUCK.
Good community members aren't whine asses
Gauss' troll account here.
If Fallout 2 didn't let me roleplay as what is possible in that game, it wouldn't be worth playing.
