I have this weird sound probelm . This happens only with freelancer, and I have this probelm for some time now.
My sound work's ok for about 1-2 min, but then this weird loud and annoying sounds starts, and I have no option but to mute the sound of freelancer.
I have tryed to re-install freelancer, I have not touched the audio options at all...
I just have no idea what to do.... I think I also re-installed sound driver's...

anyone has any idea ?

Could you be a tad more descriptive? There are plenty of bugs in Freelancer and sound happens to be one of them. Is it loud music? Because that bug is as old as the hills.

If it isn't check that the appropriate sound devices are enabled and the others disabled to avoid any conficts. Make sure you have the latest drivers. And if it all goes south, try rolling the drivers back to the oldest ones you can find.

If you are running Vista/Win7, make sure to install everything as an Administrator by right clicking the .exe file and selecting "Run as Administrator" from the menu.

I think it is this old bug 13centkiller already mentioned.
This happens when you switch tasks and when back in FL the sounds is at brutal volume.
Hit F1 and go to the sound options menu adjusting the music volume a bit.
This brings FL back to normal volume again.

I had the same problem, reinstall sound drivers / update if possible. It will fix it.

You probably have creative soundblaster card ? If not...update/reinstall anyway..

If you have 3d sound on, turn it off since it's also one of the buggy sound things in FL. Not sure if it fits with this problem.

If that didn't work then updating/re-installing your sound drivers would be the best way to solve this issue. As mentioned above

I remember I had this sounds bug once, very irritating. Usually an update of your sound drivers should do.
I think its an issue discovered by Microsoft since a long time. Once i fixed that problem, it never came back.

So basically do a research for tour sound card driver on the web. Don't reinstall it (its the cause of the problem).

If i do alt+tab, and bacjk to game, sometimes the sound is louder, and the music is on, when my prefs are set to music out, effects and speech mid level (for example).

I got to options prefs sound, click on the music button and is the slected volume as before.

But it only happens, when i alt -tab into forum, and back, and only sometimes (~25%)
