Thrust if it's just a simple lane to lane or gate to lane. I will, however, use cruise to get around, say, lanes endpoints that wrap around stuff (see: Planet New London) or really lengthy endpoints (see: Stokes Mining Station).

I always select the ring, wait till my ship manoeuvres to face the ring, then hit free flight untill I'm about 100-200 away from it, then dock.
If when I hit free-flight my cruise is charging, I leave it, if not, I thrust...

+1. Well, with freighters at least. With combat vessels, thrust + ekill as often as possible to preserve weapons energy. You can never know when you're going to need it.

It's math. Depends on the distance and the cruise-chargeup-time of your vessel. You calculate the quickest way, and that's what I use. Rule of thumb: 1,5k distance is the limit for big crafts (with low thrust), 2k for fighters etc. .
