The main point of this thread is to suggest that the Zoners employ their status as middle men to haul food from the insanely more practical source of the core and actual welcoming worlds rather than try to save a few bucks by building insanely huge and complex space born food production facilities demanding trillions of tons of materials and resources to build and maintain.

A question, Dusty. If lets say you are right and Zoners get most of their food from the Core, then why is it that FP15 and not 9, is the greatest exporter of Food in the Omicrons?

Why go the extra length of unloading food on FP15 when you can just dock on FP9. Unless we of course presume that all of those infocards are rubbish. But you could also draw the conclusion that if all merchants comming back from the Core load off food at Freeport 9 then Freeport 15 must produce almost all of its own food.

Following that logic, if FP15 provides more food than FP9, that means that more food is being PRODUCED than it is being IMPORTED from the Core.


EDIT: Can anybody give me a quote from the vanilla bar rumours that state that Zoners are the largest providers of food for Corsairs. I looked everywhere and the only thing I could find was:

1) Pharmaceuticals are the most vital element that Zoners bring to Corsairs. Food is mentioned in a brief list as an after thought.

Always consider the source of your information. That's an excellent lesson when considering infocards in guard systems.

I'd agree this is highly likely.


@Bluespawn; FP XV is described as the biggest producer and exporter of food. It doesn't mean that FP9 isn't used for the exchanging of food gotten elsewhere.

And as Dusty said, Guard system information isn't always reliable, and I don't believe that infocard was ever edited from the one Igiss gave to it. I didn't really feel a need to, as I saw that as simply the biggest producer and the biggest exporter of the food it produces.. It isn't taking into account food it doesn't produce. At least that's the way I see it.

When you go to your local grocery store and buy milk, does the milk come from a local farmer or halfway across the continent?

Thats interesting, because for most of us, the food we eat is coming from half way across our countries, or even the world. Eat fruit or vegetables during the winter? Or chocolate? For most of us, a significant portion of the food we eat comes from far away. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? There are many differing opinions on the matter and a few that actually impact on the discussion. The Buy Local movement is a good example one side of the debate. They suggest that making more of your food local serves a positive purpose in several way, first local product does not need to be shipped as far, the benefits are many, lower transport costs which lead to lower prices, less pollution, increase in local economy, and less need for chemical preservatives in food to name a few. Then there are the opponents of this movement, lets call them globalists for lack of a more descriptive name. These globalist will tell you that while much of what the Buy Local people say is true, it is only true on the surface. Globalist explain that first, using local products exclusively makes it impossible to have the varied diet that most people in the west have come to expect. You see not everything grows in every climate, for example, sugar and coffee only grow in a few places in the world. So that would mean most people would not have any caffinated beverage to drink if we only had local food. Second the globalists would explain that while local products save money in shipping costs, that by creating large specialized farms focusing on one product to export, production costs are cut significantly, globalists would say, the lower production costs more than out weight the lowered shipping costs of local products.



How does that effect this discussion you ask? Well, It may be much cheaper to ship food from Freeport 9 to Crete than from Kyushu, but the production cost on Kyushu would be much lower than the production costs on Freeport 9. Why? Because Kyushu is a large planet, specialized in growing food, while Freeport 9 is a station with maybe 200 people on it.



So, while whether it is cheaper to move food from Freeport 9 or Kyushu is up for debate, it is my opinion that after quite a bit of thought, that it is most likely cheaper to move food from Kyushu or Cambridge than to move it from Freeport 9.

Let me re-state it, so we can be clear.

Is farming on planets and biodomes the same?

Assuming some relation to RL, which I loath to do, Planet side farming should be more efficient than bio dome farming. It's sorta a "Anything you can do I can do better" type of thing. Any technology that would be able to be used on a bio dome, would most likely be able to be done on a larger scale, more efficiently on a planet.

Do the Zoners need enough food to feed anybody but themselves and a small percentage of others?

That is to say, as I was unable to find any vanilla bar rumours on Corsairs desperately feeding off of Zoners, do Zoners need so much imports from the Core? Moreover, are the Corsairs starving to begin with? The only thing I found was quotes on Vertru. Is the "Corsairs are starving" business a plot device invented in Discovery?

As I said, the bar rumour I found on Freeport 9 was, "It's thanks to the Pharmaceuticals from Atka Research Station that this Freeport hasn't been blown out of the skies."

Have the Zoners been bringing the wrong supply shipments all along?? "Bring Food, Food, Food," when all the while it should have been, "Bring medkits, vitamins, and sleeping pills!!"

Sorry, I missed this. From all perceptions the answer would be yes. Dirt on the ground. Sun in the sky. Gravity and the whole nine yards. Granted that's just what I've seen by looking through the glass.
