I enjoyed roleplaying a trader that never ran the same route twice in a row, just trading myself in circles around Sirius. I don't want to tie myself down to a faction and all that entails.
Plus, another turnoff about factions (in general) is that I feel obligated to log a certain amount of time on the character.
Trading factions are about camaraderie and organization. It's not how much you can make, but how well you get along with eachother and the tactics you can practice.
Roleplaying a trader or an escort is no different from roleplaying anyone else. It's not the trading faction that impairs your ability to roleplay, it's your undefined character.
I could be a Liberty escort that hates LSF and gives them a hard time, or an escort that always attacks slavers, etcetra. I can also be a trader that has the heart of steal and acts as a hero when pirates are around the corner, or someone who drinks too much gallic wine and loses cargo randomly or too much money in convoy gambling.
I could go on and on, but I honestly don't think the reason why people don't like trading factions is because of the RP or lack there of (allegedly).
On Topic Comment: Just because one has a lot of money doesn't mean he shouldn't play freelancer does it? I mean, you can be a trader, escort, or clerk and have fun without making money.
EX: I was in a convoy today with one of my new recruits. I lost around 16 million credits (by choice); 14 million was because my character gambled too much and the recruit is way too lucky and the other two million went to a pirate that I negotiated from 4 million.
I know examples and situations won't change much, since it was just one example, but you have to think outside the box or rather outside the limitations of the parameters of the game itself. I mean my character can have parents and be interesting too.

So, what else could it be? Please go on.
If we take into account that RP involves PVP, I think you will find you are wrong. (The answer you were looking for is that everyone simply likes PVP right?)
Most people do not define their trading characters, since they find the very act of trading boring. In moderation, trading would be better. As it stands, trading a lot is required to enjoy this mod to it's full extent.

I myself find playing a Zoner not very interesting but I do have fun trading. Not always though.
Would you like to share your view?
Most of the time, I am trading on my Zoner.
In fact, most of the time, I am trading.
Exactly, each person has their own RP preferences, and most do not like trading.

My view on Zoner RP, or trading RP?
Both if I may, make a comparison. Also I mean in-game RP not the negotiating that goes on the forums which is quite interesting right now
Also trading involves PvP, you get to get shot at too.
You can also Roleplay without PvP or hostility, but you are correct. Many people like to PvP. That's why most trading factions have a department or similar for escorting. So, in trading factions, RP can include PvP.
What's boring about trading? (F2, F3, Thrust, F2, F3 <- That is not an answer since the same can be said about PvP; EX: MouseClick, thrust, reverse, strafe, thrust, reverse) I can interact with everyone in my path, shoot a hostile trading corporation or pirate or freelancer, etc. Also, in a convoy it's all about tactics and orders (just like PvP).
Also, trading is not the only way to make credits in Freelancer. An example in my faction is that we pay people in our Social Services Office to basically Roleplay with others in the game. The most someone has made so far in one assignment is 45 million.
So, what are the big differences between a trading faction and others? Is it really just the PvP differences?
