Speaking as a former longtime faction leader, I still to this day fail to see the big deal of the importance some people place about officialfactionosity. Y'all call me crazy if you like, but I personally still don't see the benefit of officialdom outside of a simple popularity boost in the general public eye.

Imho, the idea of boosting officialness means absolutely less than nothing.

It's not that I'm 'anti-official' (although I always have been) It's just that I'm more 'pro-fun' at the root of it all.

If suffering the general headaches of officialdom is your personal preferred massochism, I'm perfectly cool w/ type of ego trip, but unofficialness is exactly equal to all the rest when all the water is really boiled off of the general fun line.

In other words, at the base of it all, there is no real difference 'tween official & unofficial save for a little gold star that says your "official" to the rest of the server

Exceptions are there. But come around and see for yourself, indies are generally lolwuts. I am not saying all but many are.

Again : This is not an INDIE - OFFICIAL FACTION THREAD. THis is a thread to discuss on how we get more Newbies and make them stay in this game.

Given that indies outnumber official characters by, what was it? 5:1? It'll invariably be an indie - official thread because there's obviously an issue there that lays unresolved.

I agree with Marburg here. I see no differences between indie and official too.

However, there is one perk to being official. Skype contacts, links, friends, cannon fodder, whatever you call them.

The difference between an indie miner and an official miner is that an official miner can instantly summon a miner to mine for him with a single Skype message. Whereas the indie miner has to system chat to ask for a miner.

Of course, this is no problem if the said indie already has contacts. But I must mention that official factions are the quickest way to obtain Skype contacts. The plus point in official factions is not the glamour, but the pals you make while you're in it.

The way to get new guys to stay is to make them interested. How to get them interested? Well playing alone ain't fun. Now keep your anti-official stances away from me. I say that these new people need pals and official factions are a surefire way to obtain some.

How are official factions better at making friends than unofficial ones then?

I think 'burg means that there's more people in a collective, so you're more likely to meet new and interesting people.

I don't want to be rude or boast, but Jumping Zoners pooled 35 players together. Unofficial faction, probably surpassing majority of official factions in number, and even activity I would say.

I think it is not about the status of a group, but about the idea and mindset behind the group.

Most unofficial factions have 10 at most.

Generally your group will get a lot more attention with the premise of easy money. Try getting 35 people with an indie pirate group.
