Hello guys! Well, I have over 4-5 years of RP experience; none of them in "space-kind" RP, mostly medieval ones like LOTR and stuff. I don't have so much experience in Freelancer, as I thought since the first time that I played that single player was so "boring" because you were not really "free" (at least in the un-modded version), you are stuck in missions that you need to complete, you haven't access to many systems, etc. So, last year, I tried to play Freelancer in a multiplayer server, I don't remember the name; I quite enjoyed it but due to lack of time had to stop. So, 2 weeks ago I decided to play Freelancer again, and when I saw an "RP" server in the server list, my eyes brighted. That was EXACTLY what I was needing, enjoy a Freelancer experience with some people who don't act in game as "this is just a game", but who gets deep inside it and follow its philosophy.

There have been many complaints about the overall players RP state on the server; but it makes me think if everyone knows exactly what is RP in essence. How could someone roleplay if the person doesn't understand what is roleplaying? I am not saying that the only cause of the overall RP state of the server being bad is this one; but maybe one of them.

What do you think about making a text explaining basically what is RP and how to RP, in an overall way, and put it or link it at the rules page? It could explain what is RP in a "base" way (which could work for any game) and then how to apply it on Freelancer. Of course it can't bee too restrictive because there are many ways to RP so it needs to be a little "flexible", but maybe pass an overall idea?

MAYBE with that, the RP level of the server may increase.

Just think about it and please give me your feedback!:)

I sincerely appreciate your attention,

Arthad/Elmkin/Smith

I may add that this could be "linked" with this suggestion: http://discoverygc.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7253 - maybe a http://discoverygc.com/rules - both of the suggestions, IMHO, would easy a lot the way to bring the newcomers to the rules and to what is RP

I'd like to add to this topic by adding something;

From a book I read, there were 5 rules called Roa's Rules. These were 5 simple easy rules, and I have found that they generally help to increase role play. These are treated as guidelines and never replace Disco rules.

1: Never ignore a call for help.
This includes even from enemies. You'll shock everyone by assisting everyone.
2: Never take from those who are poorer than yourself.
This is geared towards Pirates, but also mercs. Dont charge someone overly if they are poorer than yourself.
3: Never gamble unless you are prepared to lose.
This means that if you are not ready to lose a battle, then dont fight unless you absolutely must.
4: Always have a quick getaway.
This means always be ready to run if you are too damaged to continue fighting.
5: Never pilot a ship under the influence.
I hope I dont have to preach about this, its common sense:)

Just a suggestion to further help RP.

Hello Yuri! Yes, this could help! There could be a "basic" text explaining what is RP and then other texts explaining how to improve and increase your RP...

Basically, RP is "enter inside the game story and philosophy and do not treat it like it's just a game". Any brief text could cover that. And then yes, for further reading, more detailed texts and some examples...like yesterday when I saw a mercenary discussing with the corsairs:

"I helped you but you killed me 3 times later..."

I mean, this is not an intentional OOC neither a reason to sanctions...but...how can you DIE more than once? He could have told something like:

"You destroyed my ship and I had to escape and survive 3 times!"

This could help even people who already "know" how to RP...:)

Not a ton of time to write out an explanation at the moment, but here is a little thing from my old server.

Well, I could write down myself, even with my untrained english...but need to see the results of the poll and, if they are positive, an admin authorization!;)

Well, I feel that there is no harm in creating a post that explains role-play and give advice. However, I do believe that it should not be the Gospel, (A set form of rules that people will quote to everyone and say "youre not RP!!"). This community has grown expeditiously in the past year, (Which is a good thing), and there are allot of new players that need guidance. I feel that all of us need to help out all the new players
as much as we can to explain how it works in a respectful way, and maybe we won't be seeing all those
RP/Rules violation posts in the forums.

RP, as I see it, is about "fitting" self into the game universe. Now there are two ways: either you take existing role and play it, or you can try to create a new one and follow it. The first way is much easier as you pick one of the pre-defined roles seen in the game. The other one is harder as you have to create something that fits well into Freelancer style and story like a puzzle piece. If it doesn't fit into big picture then it's a good sign there is something wrong with your RP. However the opinions about how good character RP is may vary from person to person. Some take Freelancer RP lightly, some take it too strictly, neither one is good. The first one leads to oorp chat/factions and the other one draws the game into stagnation.

Glad people are reading Roa's Rules:D
As for your "Technique", I fly listening to German Beer Drinking Musik and Oktoberfest Musik all the time, so it gives the illusion that I am flying drunk:D

I voted "Yes" for a brief description of what it is to Role-Play, but I can't help but feel there is a lot of common sense that falls into the explanation (which maybe a few players do lack.)
It could give a few examples of OORP conduct, but remember that just about anything can be RPed (and at some point, probably will.)

EDIT: Hey, post 200. Party at my place! ...byob.
