Do you like making money by trading? If so, join one of the trader factions.
Do you like to make money by mining? Join one of the mining factions. Kruger, IMG and BMM are the main ones, Daumann decided to disband.
Do you like to make money by fighting/stealing? Pirate factions might be something to look at. Outcasts, Corsairs, Mollies, Hessians... there's many possibilities.
Do you like using bigger ships? Try joining one of the factions that often does capital ship raids with a semblance of order. Liberty Navy vs Rheinland Military comes to mind, one of those factions should do you well. Just keep in mind capital ships are expensive.

Don't join a player faction right away, stay independent for a while and explore the universe to see what suits you exactly. Once you have your heart set on a specific style of roleplay then choose a faction associated with it which you like.

While I am new here, as well, I just wanted to give a friendly reminder that the forums aren't meant to be used for freeloading or being spoon-fed information. In asking for others' opinions it helps to provide at least a little bit of detail or background for them to work off of. I acknowledge that your request is a very simple one, but like others have pointed out a little bit more information would go a long way in them providing accurate recommendations to you. There is also a wealth of information at your fingertips here on the forums and in the Wiki.

I understand that it is out of my place as a new player to be so blunt, but I find that if you want to actually be a part of the community (which is why I am assuming you would be here) that you must also contribute to the community, and not be a "leech" as it were. Your original post seems to fall under the "free-loading" or "leeching" category.

If I took your post out of context I apologize for being so blunt, and hope that my post will be received as a friendly tip.

I'd advise to go with one of the trading factions in your preferred house/area of space too. They are always a nice start into the universe since they'll show you the basics and tell you how to make money. If you have a little financial background you can use that to try out other factions.

Being new to all this I have very little information about what I should be looking for or how I should be asking questions. I come from a fantasy RP background and am very interested in expanding that into this genre. I appreciate all the good advice and will continue on as an independant pilot untill I figure this all out. Thank you for your time and feel free to hail me if you see me out there. I guess the best way to learn is just to dive into it.

One thing, though, be very careful about roleplaying fantasy concepts. This server is all sci-fi, so if you should think about how your RP would best integrate with existing lore.
