Rules : Why you get more of them...

I was going to post in reply to a flood topic, but perhaps this subject is important enough to do so in a more serious context.

This isn't even about the rule anymore, it's about the ridiculous trend that disco has been following lately with the rules being tightened up like this. See where I am coming from?

Followed less than a month later by complaining about everyone else not playing fair with him.

Quite a few people around here can't seem to make up their minds what they want.

Where there is no self-government, the ruling authority must impose government, and that government will be by it's inherent nature a burden on everyone who does self-govern themselves, while blanketing the rebellious with an imperfect solution. That's the way human nature works. There is not a government anywhere on Earth, at any time in history, founded on any sort of ideas that has avoided this.

There is not a single rule on this server that is inherently necessary, but there are multitudes of rules that have been forced upon us all by the refusal of a minority to govern themselves according to principles of sportsmanship and mutual respect.

There was no cruise rule a year ago, but this community demanded one due to abuses and now we have it.

There was no rule against owning multiple battleships a year ago, but this community demanded one due to abuses and now we have it.

There was no 4 hour death rule a year ago, but this community demanded one due to abuses and now we have it.

There was no rule about BHG engaging unlawfuls or anyone collecting bounties until recently, but this community demanded one due to abuses and now we have it.

I could go on, and on, and on. You may not remember the HOT debates on those subjects, or you may not have been here to see them, but I remember them, and I saw them.

If you want less rules, as I do, then work towards creating better self-governance among players, and fewer rules is what you'll get.

Or the current trend can continue, and you'll get more rules.

All of us basically want the same thing from this server. The only thing standing in the way is us.

So just stop whining about what you don't like and can't change, and start figuring out how to take proactive steps to encourage more people to contribute positively to the gameplay on the server.

Or do nothing except whine, and be swept aside by the impertinent minority who are more determined to get their way (to the majority's detriment) than you are.

So, what can you come up with that encourages people who know no better, to learn better and become a positively contributing gamer here?

And forewarning, this is not a thread for more whining or debates about the suitability of various rules, and I've got what it takes to back that statement up.

Tell you what all of you, if it isn't working here, or it's plain wrong ... Then there are plenty of you here,
and reading this thread who can take a step back, and pat yourselves on the back for a job well done.
You want the better roleplay, and the rules to go with it, so you get it, Then you moan ... Sheesh.
You got the busiest and best server in Freelancer history, you got the best mod for this game you can
ever imagine, and people who are prepared to put time into the mod, and running it.
Well people, now its up to you to get on with each other and enjoy it. If you don't, it's entirely your own
fault, as all the admins do round here is pick up the ruddy pieces, and take the blame for everything from
the credit crunch to world poverty ...
So take a long hard look at all of your selves, and see who is actually as squeaky clean as they would
make out, in both the rules, and in life. Then have a bitch about everything please.

All of us basically want the same thing from this server. The only thing standing in the way is us.

We do need to look at ourselves. But in honesty, I don't think that anything can be done for those who don't read this post, or respect the community enough to participate in the forums. The people here who are rule-abiding and contributing to the community are not here to police the server and to help out every single OORP person that they see. Unfortunately, we are here to enjoy ourselves.

Frankly, I see a bigger issue at hand than what you are mentioning.

Don't get me wrong. I agree with you, Xoria.

But I don't think the problem is the fact that this community needs more rules in order to keep it viable and running. I think that the problem this community is facing is the fact that many of the people here cannot treat Discovery as a game.

A reason why many of these rules exist is because people can't take dying in a computer spaceships game well, and need to re-engage in order to take revenge.

A reason why many of these rules exist is because certain people feel themselves too good for the rules.

A reason why many of these rules exist is because people feel the necessity to flame others is because they couldn't possibly be wrong, can they?

At the end of the day, it all comes down to the fact that we need to just relax, play our starships game, and accept the fact that it is a game. It is a simulation that, in combination with the forums, can feel realistic at times, but frankly, discovery will one day end. And when it does, all this realism, this simulation, this dream-like fantasty...

It's going to disappear.

Just remember that its a game, and treat it as one.

I'll throw my two cents worth in here, too.

On the whole, I also agree with you, Xoria.

Age may not bring anything else but wrinkles and slower reflexes - it does not dim the enthusiasm of someone who is a true gamer at heart. So if you take my comments to be from a old man, well, so be it.

Anyway, I see what is mentioned here:

- to be a symptom of carryover from console games. Granted, it's also from earlier internet games as well, it's also not something that was as widespread prior to such things as Xbox Live and Halo. (Not to pick on those two things specifically - just using them as evidence of the phenomenom.)

The difference between most computer games, such as Homeworld and others, was that you primarily played directly against some ONE other person. Or at most, 3 or 4. When you lost - you lost. You might have been able to respawn, but at such a disadvantage that it didn't matter in a strategic sense. In console games, you suddenly have the ability to join with a 'clan' and if you died - well, you'd just respawn and go blow the hell out of the person that killed you.

NOW - we're mixing two genres in Discovery - role playing AND combat, with the primary emphasis on role playing. BUT - the majority of the younger players coming here are coming from the combat systems of Xbox and Halo, without the experience of starting or ever playing role playing games. So their experience is in shooting - shooting some more - and then trash talking while they're doing it. (Anyone who's ever played on Live knows what I'm talking about - which is also one of the reasons I won't play there.)

It's not so much a case of there be so many sanctions as a case of the experienced players are extremely helpful and lenient for those people who break the rules and learn from being told about it. Of course, those people who break the rules and refuse to learn from it - that's where the sanctions come in.

The community rules that you mention, Xoria, come from the valid and good desire to improve the experience of the game. It's probably not mentioned as often as it should be - but the effort is appreciated by those of us who play this game.

all in all, we have a community that consists of a few people that are very determined, that speak up loudly and try to get their will. - we have a HUGE majority of players that hardly ever speak up... and we have a lot of players that only speak up when they feel that they are on the "popular side". - then we have a few that take up the opposition ( no matter what it is - - its just important to be "against" the mainstream )
Explain what part of this is not clear to you, so that I can make it more clear to you. Or just go somewhere else and abuse this thread with a thread of your own instead, but you are not going to do it here.

May I ask what in Jinx's original post needed to be edited?
Perhapse I am completly out of the loop, but I felt that he did bring up some valid points. (even though they may be his opinion)
