Server and forum outage

Apologies for the recent outage. Both the server and forum are operating normally again.

Unlike the many rumors flying around the reason was a lot more mundane:
- The server had a configuration problem.
- We have paid the bill (although we were late in paying the bill last month because my credit card details had expired -- whoops!)
- Our host has not cancelled our account.
- The admin team is not on strike.

1) "will it happen again?"

Yes it probably will. These things happen.

2) "Why did this happen?"

I'm not really sure but it was a rather interesting fault.

3) "If the host cancels our account, are my accounts safe?"

Yes. We hold backups of everything in two off site locations and at the data center.

4) "How can this be stopped from happening again?"

Donate lots of money to the server. If we have lots of money we can afford better or alternative hosting. Thanks to all those who have donated in the past. Cheers and have fun!

Things happen, thanks for you and all who helped get the server back up and running.

Oh, may I suggest looking into a back up website encase things like these happen? I guess we can use skype, but seeing official words of the admins when the server is down is always reassuring.

Let me predate this by acknowledging that yes, I am a cheapskate, and typically do not try and give away my own money. Which isn't even in fact mine, as I'm a hobo student.

4) - Why can we not implement say, several Google adsense boxes at the bottom of each forum page? They aren't especially obtrusive and can help get at least part of the way to meeting monthly hosting costs.

I know a person that hosts game servers. He mainly goes with Valve games, as he is into Sourcemod or whatever.
But he may be interested in this because of huge playerbase. And may do it free of charge if his firm ( http://evagames.eu ) is like a front-end of forums/portal and some advertisments are in game. Should I contact him for more details?
Servers are stationed in Lithuania, or he might go with ones in Europe.

I'll probably do this anyway. We have a few options but I like to try to operate things as cheaply as we reasonably can. For reference, it costs our community around 100 euros/month to operate the server and forums.

Yeah, I guess we probably should although it is nice to have an ad free forum.

Phew ... I renamed my character yesterday just one or two minutes before the server crashed, and then I was about to write a reply, hit the preview button and the forum was down, too!
All NOT my fault :D

excuse me for my lack of knowledge when it comes to servers etc, but what comp/server is hosting the game and forums at the moment, is it a , whats it called, dedicated server company thingamajig , with a 100/1000 meg connection?

it take it when you said "alternative hosting" you not that happy with the current one, since fl moved from old server its crashed more times, so i guess you arent happy and are looking for better faster server (more players online possibly if it can be done, imagine if there was 500 or more, wow!!!)

can fl multiplayer handle more than 200?
