In this scenario; should you accidentally fire on a friendly base, like a station a battleships or something, it no longer causes the local or your allied NPC's to open fire on you. This includes the station itself.
However if you fire on allied NPC ships, you still cause hostility.
How do you think this alteration could affect gameplay and tactics?
Aye, I'd also hope it would prevent the abuse of base hugging so your enemies who are neutral to your base, make you accidentally fire on it. Causing a major headache and the rules to go against you.

As far as I know friendly bases don't fire back if the reputation is high enough.
Shooting bases with anything other than a CD requires a LOT of firing to make it hostile. Much more than shooting that faction's NPCs. It's fine, just the CD problem, which can be fixed by making the faction green on your rep chart, or by not fighting around it. IMG shouldn't be fighting people at Essex anyway.

It was a very long fight a while ago involving BAF & Order, a small IMG wing jumped in after being asked for aid when we offered.
Battle got dragged to Essex, then CD's flew and Essex got very cross.
