Well, since mining was "killed", from my experience, the main moneymaking technique became trading...
Of course, pirating, ship re-selling and graphics are an option too but lets talk about trading and trading factions...
And are the advantages of being in a trading faction?

Escorts? Yeah... sadly, having escort means to pay. Paying a pirate every 5th-6th run is still better than paying escort for those 5-6 runs...

Collective? Yeah, having buddies with you to talk is always good thing but it really doesn't make moneymaking any faster. And you are (just like me) trading JUST for money, this pretty much doesn't matter.

Loan? Yeah, some factions give you a ship to start. But this is only useful for beginners or someone that for unknown reasons lost his cash. (wipe/HDD fail/other)

What is it then? Also dont forget... Flying as a faction trader gives you the probably biggest handicap you can have...
You have to TAG yourself... Really, TAG is a banner "Pirate me!!"... Not really good thing to do when you are trying to make the desired sum as fast as possible...

Lest face it... Players trades 80% for money, and being in trading faction makes it even harder. Kind of weird IMHO. Is there really nothing that can be done to make trading factions worthwhile..?

Yeah and i almost forgot...
In some trading factions, ships you can fly depends on your rank.

Highly exaggerated example:
"May i join your faction? I need to make some money."
"Sure! Here take this ship for free so you can start. *faction gives newbie some small/medium transport like Albartoss or maybe BWT*
*Some days forward*
" Fine i have enough cash now for a 5k so i can make money faster"
" No you cant haz. You low rank."

Roleplay of trading factions is fun. All the times I log on my Shire I have fun of doing stuff in a good company - regardless of profits. Suddenly, I can trade for money as well - and faction name works for your reputation sometimes. Had you ever heard of trading for the sake of roleplay events? It also happens and is done by factions. Well, on a side note, I think that you take a wrong approach to factions in general here.

I find it fun to have same minded person and lulz around. How many indies you saw flying im duos, trios etc? Few. Being in faction means you'll be able to play a MULTIplayer game with multiple players. And not only trade for money. Also, being in faction puts high responsibility. I experienced it myself... But that is the fault of others, who act according to tag and not the situation. I don't care what tag is used. Character is character and each are different.

And yes. Trading factions are inactive. And I mean trading. Not counting those escort ships that hunts someone and does not escort.

As the normal trading is a purely NSC interaction (bases), it needs no teamplay. And thus it also needs no faction logistics, infrastructure and teamwork. The only thing that is really fun in my opinion is if you do high risk runs at a time when encounters are likely. But that's only an option to consider if money means nothing to you (which is often not true especially for newer players).

Give it another try. It's actually way better than people think. And with a decent mining faction that offers infrastructure, logistics and contacts, it's fun, cooperative teamplay and you still make good money.

That is exactly what we're trying to do at Daumann TMS: trading and using escorts only for escorting traders.

Trading can be fun, even when you do it alone. Outrunning or outsmarting a pirate feels really good.

In my opinion the problem is that 50% or more of the traders are freelancers in BWT'€™s or civilian trains. People don'€™t actually need to join a trading faction or even get a corporate ID to make money and that severely restricts a trading faction'€™s recruiting opportunities.

trading factions are as needed as mining factions and pvpbased factions - there are people playing here to have fun and some of them have much fun trading so why to seek problems with factions that are good as they are?

There are many of them - each has it's own histry, promotions and style. Some of them use multiple IDs , others have multiple events per month and all of them are for their own style fun.

I am not sure what is your problem here but factions based on trading are needed not only for those who want the money fast but also for those who have fun trading itself and especialy they are needed for pirates!! man if there wouldn't be any trading factions the chaos and pirating would be just dull...all indies that are being pirated are always alone without escorts and they most of the time stay mute and/or ignoring:Pso yeah

Trading factions are good - leave them - don't look for problems where there are none.

Being a part of a trade faction I have something to say. Only trade faction "worthwhile" for any actual moneymaking is Interspace Commerce. Why? They can fly ANYWHERE, even Rheinland, and they ARE a liberty faction. Now, they ARE limited to which cargo they can carry, but being able to even go through a house at war with their patron house, is quite a formidable advantage. I'm a part of the RepEx and to be honest, it's quite gimped when it comes to profitable trade routes. The only ones worth doing are two runs: Quantum Multiplexors - Diamonds to Kusari and Engine Components - Ship Hull Panels to Leeds. If you run some of the more profitable routes, like Terraforming Gases to Okinawa and Plutonium back, you have a HUGE risk to be caught by Hogosha, if you do the Military Vehicle run, you will get regulated by KNF if you pass through Kusari, by BAF if you pass through Bretonia. The best profit runs would be guess where? In liberty, of course. Interspace can use these routes, RepEx cannot. The biggest problem however is metagaming.

Pirate: "Hmm hmm hmm, let's check the chat window, oh look RepEx-Shipping in Frankfurt! He must be heading towards Kusari, or New Berlin. I'll hunt him down for an easy two million."

With indies, you need to actually sit on a lane and hope some trader passes by.

Sucks to be a weight on the wrong side of the brilliance-insanity scale.

While IC is Liberty corporation, IC| is trying to drop that image. At least for themselves at first.

How about implementing my idea of removing the cargo limit, and assigning all trade ships to certain trade faction, giving them the power to hand out the technology.
