I'm stuck at a Physics practice question I got recently and I'm quite frustrated. I thought I might give this a try even though it hasn't been active for the past couple of months. Here it is.
A solid winding drum around which a rope is wound has a mass 5kg, a radius 0.1m and is attached to a turning wheel in the form of a disc of mass 2kg and radius 0.5m. When a 5kg bucket, tied to the rope, is dropped from rest it takes 10s to reach the water 40m below. The rope and handle have negligible masses.
Calculate the frictional torque at the axle of the winding mechanism.
